Malaseb dog shampoo

Jasper was prescribed this as his skin smelled 'yeasty' (the vet) or 'like a cross between rancid butter and vomit' (me). He has to have two baths a week for a fortnight, and then one bath a week until he stops stinking like a pole cat. He is also on antibiotics for an anal gland infection. Anyway, his first bath was on thursday night and I've just bathed him again because the smell was creeping back. Is that normal? Or should the shampoo have killed the stench straight off? He is scratching around his ears/neck and chewing his back a bit, but the vet could see no irritation o his skin. He just stank absolutely vile.

I feed my dog Wainwrights and have been advised to add some sardines, tune or brine/oil from the tuna to make his skin nice and healthy.
I can also add left over sauces I've cooked with or left over fresh veg. Sounds a lot more exciting than his plain, dry food.

With Malaseb, we've found that shampooing your dog first with a regular, gentle shampoo to remove dirt etc, the Malaseb can act directly on the skin IYSWIM?

It really is worth keeping Malaseb on for 10 minutes. With our boy, DD just ignores his whimpering and restlessness in the bath until he's "basted" for 10-15 mins, although this might be more difficult if your boy can jump out of the bath. You have to remain firm and not give in to their pleas for freedom Grin

Does he smell like stale rich tea biscuits mixed with over-cooked peas?

It's a bit...seal-y. And just very unpleasant. Rancid. Hard to describe, but unmistakable iyswim?

My dog's armpits used to smell distinctly like mouse piss!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/11/2011 13:13

Was he smuggling, Grimma? Letting rodent houseguests in for the price of a bone?

He really does smell doesn't he op Grin
I hope he is starting to get better! Fwiw AG always smell very fishy to me, especially if they are infected. Make sure dogs bottom is bathed too incase any of it is on his fur.

He really does, Sea. Although the shampoo gives us 48 hrs of relief, by tomorrow evening he'll be clearing the room again. It's getting me down, tbh. He has another 8 days on the antibiotics, and two more baths in that time, so after that I suspect we'll be back to the vet. I have this awful feeling that this is just how he's going to smell, forever. And I could weep.

No it won't, as he hasn't always smelt like this, so hopefully it an improve again :) your vet may ask to swab his ears etc to diagnose what's causing the problem-the smell you describe could be pseudomonas as well as yeast/bacteria which is harder to get rid of (but still doable!)

If anyone is having problems with their dogs skin our vet prescribed cortisone steroid external spray, that way our dog does not get the steroid internal problems. This really moved her skin condition from crocodile skin back to nice soft normal skin. On another note to stop your dog from having food trapped in and around the mouth, we have found that there are slow feed dog bowls with little areas where the dog has totake its time eating. The added advantage is they don't get food trapped in their wee mouths.
