The doghouse

Huskies are going to be the next Staffs, aren't they?

I hope I am wrong. Sad

I have noticed a LOT of people recently with young husky dogs. I have got a feeling that this time next year the rescues will be full of them once they reach adolescence and the twunts that bought them as status dogs realise they are actually bloody hard work.

I've noticed a lot about too, and people getting rid all the time when they realise the dog's needs :(

I've noticed it too. The rescues where I am (London area) already have quite a few teenage ones. I think they will be far harder to rehome than staffs as wellSad

It's full too bursting with staffs in London as well, I had a flyer through the post from Battersea yesterday asking people to consider homing a staff Sad

At least staffs are suited perfectly to being a family pet.

I think the northern breeds are beautiful and consider myself fairly experienced with dogs but there is no way I would have a husky.

They are more a lifestyle than a pet aren't they? Even more so than your average family dog.

I haven't seen very many in my part of North London. I have noticed lately a large number of working cocker spaniel puppies. Invariably, their owners are either first time owners or, inexplicably, owners of small lap dogs. Confused. I hope I am proved wrong, but I can't see many happy endings once cute bundle of spaniel fluff becomes a full on, energetic, nose to the ground, roll in the mud, working dog.

Battersea certainly seem to have a lot of huskies and similar types these days, they're probably the next most common now after Staffs and Staff crosses.

I agree they're beautiful dogs and also agree I wouldn't have one, because I really don't have a suitable home or lifestyle for that kind of dog.

There must be a lot of irresponsible breeders out there, selling these pups to completely inappropriate homes and to inexperienced owners with no knowledge of the breed.

Yup. Huskies and their crosses. A friend of mine who is heavily involved in rescue tells me they are trying to recreate as close to a wolf as they can get Hmm Angry

One thing the huskies have on their side is that these numpties are liable to be the ones that will let them off in the local park and will they buggery get them back. Hopefully they'll be found be some nice responsible person who will get them into the right rescue where their needs will be met properly and the numpties will get bored once they realise their 'wolf' will not do as it's told but will eat their house if they don't get enough exercise.

I'd love one. I adore them. I can't have one. I dream of getting one when the children are older and I win the lottery and have a bigger house and more time Smile

I managed to persuade someone to rethink getting a Husky pup as they really just fancied the look of the dog but had no idea about how much exercise was required, or the likelihood of it heading for the hills if it was let off the lead. They got a gsd rescue dog instead. There are a lot more huskys round here nowadays.

A colleague of mine didn't believe they were hard work until he went to see a litter of pups and learnt that one of the adult huskies had got out the day before and brought down a cow Shock

DH and I were just saying this yesterday :( Beautiful dogs, but so much work. Wish people would think before taking them on.

yes that is true, the husky/malli/akita is 'the' new dog for the eejits. Sad

I also persuaded someone who was keen on getting a husky not to.

We got a HuskyX by accident. The rescue thought the poor malnourished 17 week old pup was a white GSD. As we were picking her up, one of the rescue said she might have Husky in her. It was only 2 very exasperating years later that I remembered this comment and realised the reason I couldn't train her wasn't because she had Aspergers but becuase she was a Husky. Once we let her train us, she became a much better pet.

I would never recommend a Husky as a "normal" pet, but if you are happy to change your lifestyle, the reward is huge.

We had them when I was a kid. Lovely dogs but blimey only for the dedicated and slightly insane.
I still get all excited every time I see one, but have noticed loads more pounding the streets lately...

I was very upset to hear that 56 Huskies have been taken into rescue from what sounds like a BYB in Minehead. It sounded like they came from a normal house. We have 2 acres and a large house and its too small for 1 Husky! 56 in one house must have been a nightmare, without a team of dog walkers there is no way they could have got enough exercise and stimulation.

Woodrose, I have a workin cocker and though she loves her muddy walks and rabbit hunts, at home she is quite certain she is a lapdog- asleep on my knee this moment.

My aunt's neighbour had a husky when I was a kid called Yana. It had been abandoned at a rubbish dump as a very young pup because it had a facial deformity (her face was sort of screwed to the left, with a bent muzzle and one smaller eye). She was a beautiful dog, but utterly uninterested in people. He had to walk her for hours a day on an extendable lead and she slept in the garage with an attached run because if let loose int he garden she'd be over the fence and away Shock. He was marvellous with her, and she was vey much loved, but it looked like bloody hard work.

I managed to convince my brother that a Malamute was a bad idea.
He actually thought that 2 short walks and being kept in the garden all day was enough exercise.

He now has ferrets!

When the court case is over and they put the dogs up for adoption (well we can hope), then I will try and adopt one. Dh thinks I'm mad as 1 Husky was 10 times as much work as the 3 GSDs and 1 DS put together. But we so adore her that we'll risk another Grin

Hopefully the breed rescue will get involved and these beautiful animals can be saved, they will also make sure they go to dog savvy homes.

Think the main husky rescue closed its doors as it was jammed earlier in the year. I know I come across a lady when I'm walking my dogs on occasion who is involved with husky welfare and emergency fostering and the stories she tells of people who've got huskies in hideously inappropriate situations are mindboggling.

Apart from one or two locally who are lovely (including one girlie girl who's an utter utter tart in her mannerisms and makes me laugh with it) they tend to be the local dipsticks' dog of choice unfortunately.
