Oh My God how he smells

Jasper stinks. Like, proper, full on vile. He hasn't rolled in anything and was only bathed at the weekend. The stench doesn't seem to come from any one area of him, but follows him around in a noxious cloud. I love the pup, really, but it's making my eyes burn. Why?! Why does he smell so bad?! I'm in the process of switching him from Royal Canin to Burns puppy food. I wash his bedding weekly. His ears, eyes and teeth seem fine. Yet still the dog of eternal stench is stinking up the place. You walk downstairs and it's like hitting a wall of olfactory assault. Surely this isn't normal? Hmm It's not even particularly doggy. Think seal, mixed with well warmed wheelie bin. He isn't even embarassed.

Anal glands? They might go weird if you're switching food I'd guess.

Does he need his anal glands squeezed? Get an appt with your vet.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 03/11/2011 09:35

Hmmm. He had his glands squeezed two weeks ago when I had him checked by the vet because he honked. She said they were full-ish, but not desperately so and not infected. That said, he has had some runny poos in the last couple of days (food switch I'm guessing, he certainly doesn't seem ill). So I guess it's possible that it's his glands again. I've just bought dog cologne , but will get him back to the vet tomorrow. I do wonder if we're just not used to the smell of excitable spaniel.

Interestingly, someone on Cockers Online has suggested it's 'puppy breath' from teething. I suppose he'd get the stink all over from licking himself, wouldn't he? It might also explain why he only stinks when dashing about, gob hanging open, as he chases his own ears

Ok, just back from the vet. We took Jasper to puppy class, and the trainer said he did not smell normal, so we went down straight away. He has an anal gland infection, very mucky ears and yeasty smelling skin (although the vet couldn't find any actual lesions etc). So I have a two week course of antibiotics, some ear cleaning fluid that has to be poured in twice a day, swished around and cotton wooled out, and a medicated anti-fungal/anti-bacterial shampoo that has to be used twice a week for the next fortnight. And all the way through the exam, he was so bloody good. Even when the vet squeezed the infected gland and he yelped, he turned around and licked her. He is such a smashing little dog, and I just want to get him well. I'd been cleaning his ears with special wipes, but obviously not well enough :(. The gland problem might well be ongoing, so I think if it continues I'll have to learn how to do it. Someone in the waiting room said that he'd be costing us a fortune and she would be looking to find him a new home (jokingly). I was surprised by how strongly I responded to her, saying that he is OUR dog and we will do what it takes to get him to health and make sure he is taken care of. No doubt she is now saying to her OH 'Ere, I met a right nutter down at the vets...' Grin

after 2 weeks of dealign with ralphs ear issues, i can sympathise.

how hairy are the inside of his ears?

i have been recommended Thornit ear powder for ralph and reading the reviews online, i will be buying some next payday.

Ah what joys.
I've never been able to face doing the glands myself since the first time the vet did our last dog and the stinking contents shot out and spattered her cabinets. Urghhh.
