How far can a greyhound walk in ermmm hilly conditions?

I'm thinking about taking my greyhound for a 6 mile walk in the north york moors. We'll be going up and down hills but taking it steady. Do you think my little grey could cope? She's young and fit - but I'm worried about her collapsing/refusing to walk any further halfway through and being stuck in the middle of nowhere!! We normally do a 2 hour walk at the weekend but she only gets 2x20-30 mins every day during the week.

Our grey wouldn't manage it.She's 7,a retired racer & down to 3 legs now Sad
But when she had a full set of legs she would have stopped when she had enough & refused to go any further. Not good if you are half way up a hill.Greys are very heavy!!!!

Greys can build up their fitness/stamina, but if your grey is not used to this level of exercise, especially over rough ground, then I'd say no. Border Collies they ain't!!

They might be able to work up to this, but I would expect to do more graduated walks to gradually acclimatise them/build up fitness. Depending on what sort of terrain you are going through, I'd also be wary of scratches from spiky vegetation/brambles/whinberries etc. and of problems with paws. One of my fellow rescue volunteers had to recapture a grey that had bolted on a walk - it ran for several miles, and was found exhausted but by that time had considerable damage to the soles of its paws as it had been on rough ground.

When you do your 2-hour walk, once a week, that must be at least 6 miles? I realise there will be extra hills thrown it, but surely it won't be so much more than she's used to? I'd do it, but that's me. I've got a whippet X.

Ok Ill see if i can work up to it and not go for the full 6 miles- won't be doing it for a few weeks yet. I've also got some high leg booties for feet Grin. Thanks guys!

For the dog's feet? Cute.

Make sure the booties are a good fit, as the skin on the legs is so fine, and the feet are proportionately very large compared to the diameter of the leg. We struggled to get boots that were a good fit when one of ours had corns. Eventually got her Therapaws but she hated them and walks were a disaster. Sad Grin
