DD(8) needs training!

dd loves dogs, but is too excitable around them and doesn't give them enough space (quite gentle but doesn't know when to back off). Several people close to us have recently got dogs and so this may become an issue. A website was recommended yesterday on the 'AIBU' thread but I can't find it. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thank you

What area are you in?
My dog trainer does a training session for children. She teaches them how to behave around dogs and how to approach them etc. Maybe you could do a search on Google to see if there is something similar near you?

thanks for the advice. We don't have a dog to train with! Childminder's dog took a nip at her last week (drew blood). Can't verify facts, but she says she was playing with another child at time, not bothering dog. Was hoping to suggest website to childminder to bring attention to issue without causing any confrontation. DD loves childminder and dog, but I do not want the situation to escalate.

I'm not sure if the dog trainer I use actually encourages people to bring their dogs to the class. I know the class is to train the children so perhaps she uses her own dog? Its a new thing she is doing.

I went to a dog mental stimulation class with her and my dog wasn't allowed to attend (due to location of class). I'll have a look to see if she gives any more details about the class.

Update, finally found the website I was looking for. Can't do links but it's the Kennel Club/Kids/Safe and Sound. It has an interactive game. Thought I'd post in case anyone else has an over exuberant child to control.

Most good training classes should welcome people who want to come and watch. Some classes will welcome children with open arms to help with the classes as so many dogs have problems with children. If a dog trainer turns you away with your request to help your child to be safe around dogs,it is their problem, and it is important for you to press on regardless. Dogs as Therapy might well be able to help you out. Let us know how you get on!
