how do I go about it, got my acme 210.5 in the post this morning, tried calling the dogs to 2 pips and treating but they had already seen me get the treats out so were already by my ankles, I cant call them and whistle at the same time, mouth can only perform one function. hmmm.

Call , immediately whistle , treat - eventually drop the call - it does work ! Will not take long.

You have to do it a lot so it's an automatic response, not one they think about.

To start with it doesn't matter if they are on your feet, just whistle and treat a few times, maybe do it on the hour, every hour, you want a real Pavlovian response to the whistle.

Do it lots inside, without distraction, then try it in the garden. Only use it out and and about when they have really caught on and, as I was told, don't whistle up a dog's arse! Grin For a long time just whistle when they are coming towards you to increase the success rate.

All this may take some time and work but the goal is to get an automatic response so they just respond automatically and don't have time to think about the other dog/squirrel/fox poo that is beckoning!

I would not do it as above but would:

Get the dogs dinner ready and stand by the dog holding the food and blow the whistle (Usually 3 short bursts) then immediately give the dog his dinner.

Do this a all his meals for several days (the penny will begin to drop that whistle means great things!)

After a few days put the dog in another room get his food ready and open the doors so he can get to you then blow the whistle he will come charging to his food. (see recall already in action and so easy to do)
When this is solid
Put the dog in the garden and get his food ready and blow the whistle and see him chargin gup the garden for his food.

At this stage you can do this out and about but in non exciting places always reward with the best treat ever , liver sardine cake, hot dog cheese never boring kibble. (if your treats are rubbish so will be your recall)

Over time you will have a dog that can be called away from anything if you continue with the treating on recall.

This method has worked with even the most determined foster terrier who really did have the call of the wild but he was able to be let off lead in common land as long as I had whistle and liver cake!

I have taught my pup. Took two sessions.

The leaftlet I got with my £2.99 whistle said call, then whistle 'peep-peep-peep' whilst holding arms wide.

When he comes he gets a piece of ham. He doesn't get ham as a reward for doing anything else.

It is my achievement of the year! Works every time, except at the start of walks, when he gets too excited with seeing other dogs.

I did it exactly the same as notmeagain.

If you walk with other dog owners who have also whistle trained their dogs it might be worth altering your three peeps to make them more specific to your dog.

After an incident with a mate when she inadvertently recalled my dog straight into a river (she was on the other side) I changed my three peeps to short peep-short peep -bit longer peep.

ditavonteesed · 02/11/2011 15:01

slubber, I remember that well, I was going for 2 short peeps. does that sound ok, was thinking I may do more whistle training with eric as gundog but would be great if \i could get them both doing it.

And no I tend to walk on my own Sad as cherry has issues with other dogs some times and it is just nicer all round.

Dita I would stick to three incase you want to go on to train a Stop command which is one peep. Training stop is more difficult ,but it is a fab command to get as in some circumstances it is safer to get your dog to stop-down at a distance rather than recall them.

I use it with joggers. Well not with joggers, I don't get them to stop-down Grin . No if Elsie is away from me and a jogger charges round the corner it's just easier to get her to down than have her pelting back freaking out the jogger
and it's really cool and impresses people when you are out for a walk and they nod and go ooooh at your dog skillz
