House training question

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone can provide some advice for me. I have a Miniature Schnauzer puppy who is 12 weeks old - we have had him since he was 9 weeks. When he arrived he was already quite well house trained but seems to have regressed. He does seem to have very good bladder control as he is completely dry at night or when we have popped out of the house without him. However, during the day when we are at home with him he struggles to understand where he should be going.

The majority of the time at home he will go and do his toilet in the garden, but there are quite a few times when he won't go outside or goes out and doesn't do anything comes back in and does a wee in the house, or sometimes he'll even sit by the back door and wee on the mat, while I'm outside calling him! Or he'll go off and wee in the dining room (I have used the special stuff to remove the stain & odour).

I work part-time and am lucky to be able to take him into the office with me but he is worse there... I take him out on the lead regularly to the grass area outside but he is too busy sniffing and looking at everything and will not toilet outside. Then he comes back in and goes on the office carpet.

I know he is still only young so is it just an age thing and he'll get it eventually? Or do you have any ideas for me to assist the learning process? At home I have tried keeping him in the kitchen only but he wees even more then (possibly in protest?).

Any ideas welcome.

Praise hugely when he does it right.

When he does it wrong, mop up with towel, take it and him outdoors to help him understand that's where it belongs. Next time you take him out, take him to his smelly towel. (Not sure how this will work in the office!)

Clean up really thoroughly inside with lots of the odour neutraliser. If you see him sniffing where he's been before indoors take him outside pronto.

Don't let him sit on the mat while you call him!

Thanks Grimma - I'll give the towel idea a go!

He does get lots of praise when he does it right, but maybe I need to introduce some treats... or is this setting myself up long term?

He sniffs at everything, so its often hard to tell if he is sniffing because he needs to go or if he is sniffing just because he loves to sniff.
