Could we all add recommendations of good places to go where dogs are welcome. Fed up sitting outside in the freezing cold beer garden, clutching tea cup to keep warm.

I will start with the Ship Inn in Broughty Ferry near Dundee. You cannot take the dog into the restaurant but you can eat in the bar area where dogs are welcome. INCREDIBLE food.

And my favourite B&B in Scotland Aird Hill in Badachro.

The Castlebrook Inn, Compton Dundon, nr Street, Somerset. Umm, will see if they have website, and make a link. Dog treats (not unlimited) and water are available. For people, fab food, childrens menu, playarea, bouncy castle in summer, camping, shop, skittle alley. Sunday carvery in restaurant where dogs aren't welcome, but they will (normally) dog sit while you eat. :)

There's loads of pubs which allow dogs, esp in the countryside - too many to remember names. I was particularly impressed by the amenability of pubs near the Norfolk Broads - a lot of boaters have dogs who they don't want to leave on hired boat, the hosts obviously realise this. I wish I could remember the name of quite a posh place which had a dog lurking under nearly every table!

MmeLindor. · 01/11/2011 14:20

Grimma
A lot people say that, and it is probably true in the Highlands or the Lake District, but where we go on holiday (Dundee/Perth/Edinburgh/Glasgow) it takes military planning to go for a cuppa.

Not one cafe in Pitlochry would let us in the door.

Dog and Gun in Keswick, food good especially after a long walk, it gets very busy though as it seems its the only pub in Keswick that will allow dogs in. If anyone can tell me different I would appreciate it as sometimes an alternative would be better than a long wait with tired kids.

Elibean · 01/11/2011 14:39

London SW13: the Red Lion in Castelnau has a big pub garden, great food, and have seen lots of doggies there (all well behaved or on lead, though).

GrimmaTheNome · 01/11/2011 14:48

Perhaps you need to holiday in some of the nice bits of England instead Grin - this may be useful but just looking at the numbers the Lakes looks to have more dog-friendly pubs than the whole of Scotland. We tend to take sarnies to the Lakes and go on days when sitting outside is a pleasure so haven't sampled too many for eating inside with dog - Drunken Duck is VG.

In the Lancashire list, we've never taken the dog but the Inn at Whitewell is extremely good.

Going to the other end of the country, The Royal Oak in Withypool is wonderful. That list doesn't include the inn in Bicknoller, that has good food and dog friendly - there's probably loads more down there than listed!

MmeLindor. · 01/11/2011 15:43

Yes, that is the problem - there are a few doggy friendly websites but there are mainly in England, not so many for Scotland.

And MNetters may well know of places that are good for both children and dogs.

The White Eagle in Rhoscolyn, Anglesey (Wills n' Kate's local!) - very welcoming to dogs both indoors and out and will give them bowls of water and the odd biscuit! The food is lovely too (for humans)

Lizcat · 01/11/2011 17:22

In the Isle of Wight great places for dogs and kids include The Dell Cafe at the end of Ryde sea front, The Met Bar in Ventor (don't be put off by the menu card, the blackboard has the best stuff on it), The Boathouse in Springvale and if your dog is is small and mostly dry the Sunday lunch at The Old Fort in Seaview is to die for. There are several lovely landlords like meGrin who allow dogs in our holiday lets. The mobile mop has just returned from a 5 day long trip of cafe visiting in the IOW.

Oohh good idea.

I am yet to find anywhere near me - Berkshire but near my Mums in Somerset, Glastonbury, Yeovil way there is a place called Ham Hill (off A303) there is a great walk with far reaching views and the pub is called Prince of Wales - serving lovely food, dog biscuits and drinks.

babysaurus · 01/11/2011 18:49

The Stubbing Wharf in Hebden Bridge is fab for both food and dogs.
At the other end of the country, we honeymoon'ed in Polperro and found almost everywhere was accommodating for dogs. Do beware though, our dog went bonkers in this pub, barking like mad at nothing in one corner, and we later heard from various people it's supposed to be haunted!

Hatwoman · 01/11/2011 18:53

I was rather suprised to find a dog friendly pub in London last night. very nice it was too. excellent rabbit terrine. victoria stakes

HedgeHop · 01/11/2011 18:53

The Inn at Whitewell, in Lancs. Their website says: 'As always we are happy to accommodate pets and children of all ages almost everywhere in the hotel. Such a lot of dogs are now regular customers that the odd cat may prove problematic.' :)

benandhollyandgaston · 01/11/2011 18:56

Resort-wise I think Sandy Balls is great for dogs.

We went in the summer and dogs are allowed outside in the plaza and courtyard bits and bowls of water are provided so it's possible to take dogs with you to eat (outside, at least).

There is also a pretty sizable exercise field on site. Our dog loved it there.

There are quite a few dog-friendly pubs in London - I was a bit surprised by this as well! There's some nice ones in Greenwich, good for lunch after a doggy walk in the park :)

WoodRose · 01/11/2011 19:23

Hatwoman - are you allowed to take dogs inside the Victoria Stakes or are you confined to the terraced area. Oooh, am becoming very excited by the idea of long, leisurely lunches after a good walk around Ally Pally!!!

MmeLindor. · 01/11/2011 20:21

ooh, some great suggestions here.

I thought we could all just keep adding to this, to make a MN database of dog friendly places.

Hatwoman - I would also like to know if you can take dogs inside the Victoria Stakes.
You can take dogs in the garden of the Clissold Arms in Fortis Green N10 (although don't see many dogs) and of course inside and out at The Spaniards Inn following a walk on Hampstead Heath.

Hatwoman · 01/11/2011 21:52

there were 3 dogs inside the Victoria Stakes last night. one took issue with the cocktail shaker.

Hatwoman · 01/11/2011 21:54

beertrix - the whole Dungeon Ghyll is dog friendly - we took big dog there - he slept in the bedroom with us and lay by the fire in the sitting room - only bit he wasn;t allowed in was the dining room

chickchickchicken · 01/11/2011 22:25

the Ram Inn in woodchester, stroud. fabulous walks and then great food inside in the warm with dog

Egypt Mill, nailsworth. lovely restaurant. they allowed our dog in there after coming outside to see dog so dont think its standard but worth asking

i dont think i have come across a country pub in gloucestershire (where i live) that doesnt allow dogs. the pubs in gloucester city centre which are usually hovels with dirty carpets dont allow dogs Hmm

This is abroad but a great stop off in France if you're travelling down by car. A gorgeous and inexpensive hotel and brilliant restaurant, about an hour south of Paris in Burgundy, just off the motorway. Great if you're driving eat, to Germany, to the Alps, to Provence....

Dogs allowed all over the place. Let them know in advance there will be biscuits and water in the lovely rooms, and the dog can come and sit by you in the restaurant too (and if you're lucky will get leftovers from the chef). Brilliant lanes and fileds for off-lead runs before setting off on your journey.

We stop there whenever we go to my inlaws who are on the west coast (we are on the eastern borders).

here it is

It's also a great place to buy Burgundy wines as they don't up the prices too much from trade prices.
