My beautiful doggy has a history of fits starting when she was about 6 months old. She is not on medication because they are not considered severe (and we do not want to medicate until we MUST. She usually has them when asleep and about every 6 months or so. He last one was June 2010 so we were hoping she had grown out of them but it would seem not.

This is the first tie she has had one when my husband has not been here so I'm all of a tiz. It lasted about 4 mins (that just with me counting seconds though) and recovery was about 20 mins (She is now going back to sleep). I'm expecting two more as they usually come in threes.

DH and I were planning on going out tonight as we get loads of trick or treaters and it drives her ad so she was going to grannies while we went to pictures. Obviously I can't/wont leave her now, but what (if anything) can I do about trick or treaters who will disturb her? Would a sign on the door saying "Ill dog, please do not knock" seem ridiculous?

Aww hope your dog is ok and hope you are ok now the shock of her fit is passing. As for a door sign I would find that perfectly reasonable. Plenty of people say to put a sign on your door when you've come home from hospital/have a new baby etc and not up for visitors so don't see why this would be any different, especially as you know it would cause her distress

She's been fine for the last hour. She's eaten some wet food (big treat for her!) and my mam has been over and she reacted as if everything was normal. Have decided to risk taking her out to avoid trick or treaters (I live in Chav central and Im not convinced they can read will take notice of a sign. my mam lives in old peoples houses to she gets no bother.

I'm still in a state of shock. Like I say, I usually have hubs here to hand hold me through it.

That's probably for the best then, she can have a nice quiet and relaxing night where she won't be disturbed. Glad she sounds ok now, it's probably been worse for you than her, fits are not a nice thing to witness and are very scary, hope your husband is home soon

Tanks Louby. I'm kicking myself as it was just yesterday we were saying that it's ages since she had one. Typical.
DH is home at 6.30 and I'm hoping he'll work from home tomorrow as i have doctors app and don't want to leave her if I can avoid it.

I pray this is a one off, poor mite. Know how you feel, GSD1 is epileptic, as was my very first dog too.

Big hugs for your little girl.

Oh how awful for you. Our lovely Wei started fitting at the age of six and it was terrifying. Look after yourself OP. Sad

Goldenbrown1981 · 31/10/2011 21:57

We are still going good. I think we will prob have another overnight, but am prepared for it so will be ok. DH home now so I'm not dealing with it on my own any more.

I feel like such a wuss, I know people will be thinking 'it's just a dog' but she is my baby.
