Thunder and fireworks

Last night my dog paced, panted and whined ALL NIGHT at the low level thunder and lightning. She is now 5 and getting worse as she gets older. She has the run of the house and usually sleeps in our room, last night we let her on the bed for comfort but she wouldn't settle and kept jumping on and off. We have tried ignoring it all and paying no attention to thunder/fireworks to set an example, but that doesn't work either.

Does anything at all work? Before we kill her

Have you tried a few drops of Bach's Rescue Remedy in her drinking water? Same result as humans, calms them down a bit and is vet recommended - alternatively you could go to your vet and ask for something else.

I was also going to suggest Rescue Remedy. It was recommended by our vet for anxiety.

Hullygully · 26/10/2011 13:33

Thanks, I'll try it. Did it work for your dogs?

You could play videos/cd of thunder/fireworks noise while you pottering around the house, to get her used to it, my parents did that to our old dog as she hated it, and after a few days of it when the fireworks went off propery she was fine, didnt care at all,

Gothic - I have fed our dog literally pounds of ham while chattering and ignoring fireworks so that she has positive associations. Didn't work. I'll try the video though.

This was my mum's dog, who has now passed. I would put 5 drops into her drinking water and she'd be fine. I do the same for my own dog as he hates the hoover so fireworks would give him vapours and he hasn't shown to be bothered. Friends who have tried it have also found it to work but I'm sure there are some out there for whom it doesn't but fingers crossed!

Mum's dog was a mix of lab/collie/gsd and our dog is a lab retriever.

How did it go Hully?

Hullygully · 06/11/2011 09:44

I put the radio on loudly, closed all the curtains and gave her rescue remedy, but she still shook and panted and wanted to sit on my lap...

oh well, hopefully that's it until next year.

We picked up our pup yesterday - a big advantage unknowingly!! He must think the fireworks noise is part of the background noises of his "forever home" - he couldn't have cared less.

Fo0ffyShmooffer · 06/11/2011 10:47

Those who recommend Rescue Remedy I wondered if I would be ok to give it my old girl who is nearly 14?
Last night she wee'd and poo'd three times in fright. She's finding it harder to cope no matter what we do. Could i introduce something like that into her system at her age?

smartyparts · 06/11/2011 12:23

We had an organised fireworks party in our village last night. I stayed home with our 7 month old and my mil's 4 month old. They were both pretty good although my dog did bark - a lot. They didn't seem frightened though.

But then my next door neighbours decided to have their own fireworks at 10.30, midnight and 1.30am! So the dogs (or their owners) were very unsettled. I'm a bit cross with my neighbours they have done this before and mightily pissed off all the horse owners in this village too. My dh went out this morning and lobbed all the spent fireworks in our garden into theirs!

I am hoping no more fireworks now until NY eve.

Try rubbing a little in her ears Fo0ffy rather than getting her to ingest it. This method works as well, works on cats too as we used it once on my mother's elderly cat.

I use Rescue Remedy too so it works for humans also! (Though I am not scared of fireworks, thunder or general big noises! Certainly not enough to poo or wee myself :D ) I used a few drops on the tongue to help me through a particularly anxious time.
