Please advise: family freindly dog breeds and where to get one

DH and I are relatively experienced dog owners, oldest DC is very used to dogs and other animals DC2 is only 2 but has been around dogs too.

We have not had a dog for 18 months after our last attempt at adoption of a mature Border Terrier ended in disaster - he turned out to be very violent to other dogs and bit DC1 when he (the dog) was attempting to get into another fight we did try training but the bite was the last straw.

We all would like another dog, I am insisting on a puppy (maybe 2?) and preferably a bitch, but we cannot agree on the bread. I would love a Standard wirehaired Daschund but DH thinks they are lapdogs and I cant seem to sway him.

The breed must not be big - no bigger than a Standard Daschund - preferably wire haired, must have a reputation as an excellent family pet, must not be a hunting type dog like a jack russel, must not be overly energetic like a Springer spaniel or a Collie. It should not be too strong for an 11 year old to take on short walks and should be able to put up with a toddler pulling its ears every now and then.

We will consider a cross breed but must be able to see both parents, and I think we would even consider an older dog if we could meet the previous owners and have a good idea of its past and temperament but I wont adopt from the pound again after the last fiasco (I know its a shame to be so biased but I have small children to consider and also I get very attached to my dogs and the last one broke my heart).

Any suggestions welcome please. Also where do you buy a dog from? is there a special classified section somewhere that I just don't know about? The only place I know is the Pets at Home notice board...

I agree about meeting some actual dogs, might be especially useful for your DH if he has unjustified preconceptions about certain breeds.

When we were looking for a rescue dog, I had a whole list of requirements and restrictions: bitch, small/medium size, light colour, short coat, 'nice' Hmm breeds only. Of course the big boy you see on my profile meets exactly none of those criteria, but he turned out to be the perfect dog for us, and I can't imagine being without him now!

GrimmaTheNome · 18/10/2011 17:33

That's a small/medium bear isn't it? Grin

Ephiny · 18/10/2011 17:41

That would explain a lot :)

DogsBeastFiend · 18/10/2011 17:49

Oh! Oh! Oh! I think I've just had a glimpse into heaven! WOW!

Ephiny, I'm coming to your house and stealing your dog! What an absolute stunner... beautiful.

I had cockers all through my children being born and growing up. The children were taught from very young not to pull tails, ears, etc. They are, for me the ideal dog for a family. If I didn't live in an area where I'm surrounded by sheep, cows, horses, etc, and with a garden that isn't secure enough for a dog, I'd have another now in a heartbeat.

Incidentally, I did keep two together at one point, and they got on very well indeed. However, the boy was my Mum's dog who came to us when she died, and the girl was our one, so they knew each other pretty well anyway. I'm in agreement with others - don't get two puppies at the same time. Get one, and perhaps another in a couple of years.

I do love my gorgeous Charlie cat though.

Ephiny · 18/10/2011 19:48

He's a cutie, isn't he DBF. Though I bet you think all dogs are beautiful :)

wailinmytale · 18/10/2011 19:55

Ephiny I love your bear Grin

Thank you everyone for your time and energy. I will talk to the rescue places that you have recommended and make sure that DH comes to meet any potential dog. He does have a soft heart really though I think it may not melt for staffies, sadly.

I do, Ephiny, but your boy wins especial praise on that front. A fluffy Rott type! A dream come true!

wailinmytale · 18/10/2011 21:34

incidentally DogsBeastFiend I had a look at your photos, your staffie cross cuddled up to a cat reminded me that mine used to sunbath with my giant rabbit :)

Wail defo check out Many Tears. That's where my secret-staffie-bits-in-lab-puppy comes from and it was a joyous experience Smile

Elibean · 19/10/2011 10:10

DBF just looked at your Monty, brought tears to my eyes...what a love. Any ideas what he was crossed with?

Fifis25StottieCakes · 19/10/2011 10:17

Staffie, fab with kids and the ideal family pet.

Mine adores my kids and is the softest big lump you could get.

I would only get 1, 2 is hard work.

flossiXxX · 20/10/2011 14:37

When we 1st wanted a pup/dog, we tried many rescue centres.
My other half was told by a vet that staffies were the best dogs to get with children.
We found a beautiful litter of puppies from RSPCA but they would not let us own one as our lil one was 2. Thier reasons were because thier teeth are sharp Hmm yet they would let us take home 2 incontinent older dogs with health issues??? I have heard many stories about the RSPCA so understand why DOGSBEASTFRIEND won't call them a rescue centre!
Many other rescue centres would not let us adopt because of our lil one either.
Eventually we found lola our springer cross beaglejackrussle. Love her to bits perfect size great with our lil one and other kids too!
Do not rule out staffies tho they are such beautiful dogs who have a bad rep because of stupid horrible people who think they look hard with one! Hence why there are so many in rescues!
=) good luck =) x

wailinmytale - you are lucky being so close to Many Tears! I had to do ten hours driving to pick up my dog on Monday. There are so many available and have details of all the dog's natures on the website manytearsrescue.webs.com/dogslookingforhomes.htm Mines a crossbreed and is totally allsorts.

KatharineClifton · 20/10/2011 15:00

Forgot to convert link -doh!

manytearsrescue.webs.com/dogslookingforhomes.htm

KatharineClifton · 20/10/2011 15:05

And they have had a lot of new pups in since I last looked, so sure to be a dog to suit you there.

GrimmaTheNome · 20/10/2011 17:36

Know now why its called Many Tears.... just like to say all those fosterers must be very special people.

higgle · 20/10/2011 20:13

If "Many Tears" makes you cry, try "Happy Staffies" instead! (They still need homes) Oldies Club is the site that makes me emotional - I want to adopt them all.

DogsBeastFiend · 20/10/2011 20:22

Elibean, no idea what Monty was crossed with... except something just as loving, gentle and affectionate as a Staffie. The sad thing is that if his muzzle hadn't been pointed but rounded instead he would, if still with us, be viewed as a Pit Bull Type and ordered to be killed by the law. :(

Elibean · 20/10/2011 21:42

Mad, isn't it Confused

I have my own staffie cross (I think) snoozing at my feet right now, and it doesn't bear thinking about.

extremepie · 20/10/2011 23:03

Just out of curiosity why do you specifically not want a big dog? I have 2 and they are great with everyone including my 2 young DS's :D

Hannelie · 21/10/2011 09:14

We have a miniature schnauzer - had it from a pup and he is fantastic with everybody including kids and other dogs. Doesn't shed, easy to teach and loves family walks.

wailinmytale · 21/10/2011 12:01

To be honest having started this thread and read all the opinions and looked at the websites at all those poor dogs, I don't know what I want. Except that it must be good with kids and other dogs and all other animals too, I know that no animal is bomb proof but I would like to get as close as possible Confused
