Any experienced harvest mite killers out there?

My dog has harvest mites and I am struggling to shift them. Our vet has prescribed front-line spray but so far it isn't making much difference. I have googled a bit on the internet but haven't really come across any other treatment options. Has anyone tried anything else and had success?

I'd be so, so grateful for any ideas. I think my DD and I are getting the old bite too. Has anyone used thornit powder?

Feel so sorry, and guilty, for my itchy girl (the canine one). We wasted a fortnight because we were initially told she just had a slight bacterial skin infection and were given antibiotics. The skin scrapings we opted to pay for came back clear of any parasites but, now I know what to look for, I'm really surprised the orange dots didn't ring bells straight away.

The front line spray worked for us, although we concentrated it a bit in the armpits and then vaseline-ed his armpits before he went on the kinds of walks where he picks them up. Are they the same ones hanging around, or could he be picking up new ones each walk, and the frontline taking a few days to kill them off?

The first year we didn't really do anything, thinking it was related to a skin problem he came to us with and they didn't stick around out of season, so they shouldn't be with you too much longer. Hope someone comes along soon with more advice though.

I have always used frontline successfully. Though I wear gloves and then spray it on to my hands and then wipe on the affected area. It is the only licensed and therefore tested product avaliable.

Agree with Lizcat - Frontline's the only thing I've ever used, and it generally works fine - they are a brief problem at this time of year anyway, so the problem shouldn't be around too much longer, as RunnerHasbeen said.

Hmmm, maybe I didn't manage to apply it properly. I'm only used to easy-peasy spot-ons and I think the smell may have made me over-cautious with the application. She does seem to be biting her paws less. Its the fiddly bits around her ears and face that are troubling her the most. I'll try those bits again.

Pleased the harvest mite season will soon be over. Not sure if she is picking up a new batch each walk or not.

I've always used vaseline on my cats. In fact that was what the vet told us to do! Works by starving the mites of oxygen, and then you can just scrape them off. Thankfully we haven't had a problem this year, but we've moved so maybe that's why.
