Worming and Fleas etc.

Hi - we have taken on two gorgeous Yellow Labs and I know they were wormed, flea'd etc. before we had them but looking to stock up ready for the next lot.
Best recommendations - I have spent much of the morning reviewing and am losing the plot on what covers what?
Advocate? What else? Any help very much appreciated

We use Frontline for fleas and Drontal for worms. It is far cheaper to buy over the internet than in a shop, and cheaper still to buy in bulk.

We get the wormer from the vet - used to be drontal, now its Milbemax. I don't know if there's any significant difference. We do it every 2 months - if the dogs are around kids the wormer is most important.

We use Frontline - not so much for fleas but as protection against ticks. Fleast may be itchy but tick-born diseases such as Lyme are serious.

Thanks both - someone had mentioned to me about dogs building up immunity to Frontline so the Vets had started using Advocate instead? Have you heard anything like that?

I'd not heard that - surely the question would be whether the ticks became immune, rather than the dog?

Advocate doesn't treat ticks or tapeworms, but it is the only licensed treatment for lungworm. Milbemax treats all worms, but only has limited effectiveness against lungworm. Frontline does seem to be less effective in many areas these days; the over the counter version (rather than the combo) seems to be almost useless round here. I suggest you ask your vet what he/she would recommend for your local area.

Definitely ask your vet what they would recommend locally. It does vary. Frontline is still okay around here but I recommend that my clients alternate their flea and worming brands to avoid resistance.
