Previous thread too big for more messages! Amazing we have any time at all to post.
Wyrdmother, hopefully his tummy will be sorted soon then. Pop finally firming up here (sorry!) so I'm almost confident we can buy a huge bag of food. We still haven't offered much in the way of treats, just his normal kibble. Will need something more exciting for recall off the lead!

First puppy class last night went well. Got a babysitter so DH and I could both go. Makes it expensive but I really want him to feel involved as he's quite good at letting me do everything (and I'm quite good at taking over!). We all enjoyed it and pup showed off his 'sit' and 'wait' beautifully. His lead walking, however...! Oh well, lots to work on anyway. The other two puppies were much older, I think they'd mixed a couple of classes as people were away. We can't go next week but there are some younger puppies starting then. He fell asleep in the car on the way home and slept all night! Had to force him out to the loo.

Not sure how to get out for lead practice this week. DH working lates then away for the weekend. I can't walk with pushchair or free toddler. She'll have to go on my back in a sling I suppose, but can't in this foul weather! Or I'll have to force myself to get up in the mornings before DD wakes up. Just couldn't this morning!

Mouse has, as yet, not discovered the dishwasher. He does love cuddly toys though - poor dd2 has to keep rescuing her love object teddy.

Do you think I should get him one of his own?!? I'm worried he'll rip it up and eat bits (he's given to eating bits of all sorts in the garden)...

Elibean · 11/10/2011 11:01

Sorry, another question Blush

How long/often are you/did you walk 5-6 month old medium sized dogs for? We're not doing much off lead yet (not supposed to, as per Rescue's instructions) and are doing 3 walks per day, one of them longer (maybe 45 minutes) and the other two about 30 minutes. Is that too much?

PegsOnTheLine · 11/10/2011 11:14

May I join you. We welcome our new family member at the weekend after al 2 years of planning about getting a dog.

Bowser (name chosen by the children) is a JR X Patterdale and is 9 weeks old. He's a really sweet and cheeky boy. I love JRT and there are several in my family, my mum is deaf and has trained hers to become her hearing dog, he is brilliant.

He has settled in quite nicely over the weekend. First VET visit yesterday and everything is well. Booked him for his 2nd set of jabs on Friday.

DH is SAHD until January so we thought it would be the best timing to settle him down with us.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 11/10/2011 11:54

Jasper just hit the vicar on the head with a carrot. I shit you not. Luckily she laughed. While picking bits of carrot out of her hair. She has dogs as well, so you'd think she'd know that bending down to rummage in a handbag will get you leapt on.

Naughtynina · 11/10/2011 12:05

Hi I have a 15 week old pug called Mrs Pugsley lol!!

She also cleans my plates for me in the dishwasher. Saves the onion bits blocking it up.

She is such an easy pup and I love her!! (wells up)

Naughtynina · 11/10/2011 12:11

Lol Chickens! my pug was being given the once over by my mil the other day. She thinks pugs are ugly, so Mrs Pugsley gave her a good old face full of pug snot to prove they are in actual fact gorgeous. Hilarious.

alibobins · 11/10/2011 13:47

Hi can I join too :) we have a lovely cokerpoo called Perry or Agent P according to my 6 year old lol
He has settled in really well and doing well with toilet training only the odd accident. He slept all night without crying last night even when I warmed ds2 a bottle up he just looked at me and went back to sleep.
He is having his second lot of jabs on the 27th Oct and can't wait to take him out.

clam · 11/10/2011 16:09

Mine is a cockapoo as well, alibobins. Loveliest-natured dog ever, and seriously cute. Golden. What colour's yours?

Elibean · 11/10/2011 19:19

Agent P would go down very well in this house too - girls didn't think of that one!

My first question was answered by visit from db and his wife, youngest son and huge pointer: they brought a toy mouse for Mouse, so he has his own cuddly toy now (and its a dog toy, so hopefully tougher than dd's bear). He loves it.

Elibean · 11/10/2011 19:20

pegs v clever of your mum and dog both, to do the hearing dogs training! Love patterdales...

alibobins · 11/10/2011 21:34

clam he is a golden colour too with some white bits he is so lovely.
We have had some moments with ds2 dummies and blankets so now the dog has got a little blanket he drags around the house to wherever he fancies and ds2 is happy snuggling away his own blankets.
We have had a couple of accident today as Perry doesn't seem to like the rain!!

ditavonteesed · 12/10/2011 07:23

elibean - I would say that is way too much the rule of thumb is 5 mins per month twice a day, so at 6 months 2 x 30 mins. I tried to stick to this with my terrier but as she passes 6months I struggled, however I take her on one long walk with one short walk now she is grown up. I am struggling to keep eric to his alloted 20 mins, he usually ends up getting about 45 mins but it is mostly running round off lead so not really much different than playing in the garden.
Training is what really wears them out. lots of head work. I am finding that excercise is whate ric really needs now it is training. eric is going great guns here, trying to give cherry plenty of space from him and wear him out so he doesnt mither her constantly. have trainer coming tommorow to see cherry think we are getting her there.

To new puppy people, where are all the photos on profiles?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/10/2011 09:33

I haven't let Jasper off lead yet. I'd be afraid I wouldn't get him back. Should I be letting him off at the park etc? At the moment, we do the school run, so a 20 minute walk twice a day. At the weekend we went to the park, and then just a short trot around the block in the afternoon. I was planning on getting a retractable lead so that we could practice recall. Good idea or not?

belindarose · 12/10/2011 09:38

How old is jasper? Our trainer said to start letting him off straight away and we did. He loves being out in the woods and fields. I'm always a bit nervous, but no problems with recall yet. It's best if we go out with a friend with well behaved dog, as mine follows her's. We're doing more off lead than on as I find it too hard to manage toddler and lead work!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/10/2011 09:41

He's 14 weeks, so only been out and about for around a fortnight. I'd be nervous of letting him off where there are other dogs, as he was attacked last week by a very determined terrier. I think he might leg it in to the great beyond if another pooch came too close. Hence why I was thinking about the retractable lead.

PegsOnTheLine · 12/10/2011 11:21

I've posted pics now.

Big breakthrough last night Bowser did a poo in the garden! Lots of praise and a nice treat. Then he was off to bed and was a very good boy.

All was well until I told DH to take him out for his morning wee ...the whole family finally wakes up to realise it is an hour early...I pressed my DST button on my alarm clock during the night Confused

Pup was napping when I left him with DH for school run!

ditavonteesed · 12/10/2011 11:38

pegs, so cute.

Spamspamspam · 12/10/2011 11:39

Chickens - advice I have always had which I followed is to let them off asap whilst they are young. We let our terrier off the first day she could go out and she stayed so close which is what we were told. At this age it is highly unlikely he will stray too far away from you. If you start working on his recall now it will hold you in good stead for the future. When my husband and I first took out our pup we would call her between us, one of us would hide behind trees and call the pup to us and treat her and we made it a lot of fun for her to come to us. Since then I have been able to let her off on most walks (unless there are rabbit holes or unless she is in season!)

Let him off

Spamspamspam · 12/10/2011 11:55

Elibean - way too much for this age. General rule is 5 minutes per month twice a day so 50 mins in total for 5 months and 60 minutes in total for 6 months. Puppies really need their sleep. Throughout the whole of the new puppy thread part one it was really stressed not to do too much with these puppies as they get overstimulated which can cause problems now and problems down the line. Have you read Solo's thread on an average day. In my opinion she has done far too much with her puppy who expects far too much stimulation and attention and her day is being run by him.

At 5/6 months I was walking my pup for 30 mins a day and then playing or training with her for a further 20 mins at other times during the day, or she might have a puppy play date plus a short walk. She is a terrier who I read everywhere are "nightmares" and have way too much energy, however mine is really chilled and sleeps most of the day or amuses herself without getting up to mischief and she now (at 8 months) gets one walk a day for about an hour - 3 miles. Anymore than this and she is tired.

Elibean · 17/10/2011 13:17

Bumping for gothicangel Smile

Elibean · 17/10/2011 13:22

And having come back to find this thread, realize I've been rude and not seen two posts answering my question! Thank you, spam and dita Smile

We cut down pup's walks soon after I'd asked, as realized we were just 'overdoing' everything in anxiety to not 'under do'. He is off lead most of the time we are out, and most of that time is spent playing with other dogs - so he is getting lots of exercise playing, but isn't actually doing much walking. No more than 15-20 mins per day on pavements, at the most.

Mouse actually loathes pavement walking, but once on the Common he has a great time...and it takes forever to walk 100 yards, with all the sniffing and playing. We're doing it twice a day now, aiming for 30 minutes (he's coming up to 6 months) but in reality often 45 minutes, as we sit and watch dogs play, play, sniff, play some more...does that sound ok?

Elibean · 17/10/2011 13:22

Oh, and we practice 'sit' at every road crossing there and back (which takes time) and have just started 'stay' for five minutes during the walk.

gothicangel · 17/10/2011 13:41

thank you, Elibean :)

were getting our new pup in 3 weeks she will be 8 weeks then.

i have a 4 yr old cocker spaniel but sadly missed her puppy days as she is a rescue dog, (curently sat on the sofa next to me) and havent had a dog as puppy since i was a child

any advice would be amazing :) x

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 17/10/2011 13:53

Thought I'd update. We've had Jasper 3 weeks today, and he already feels like part of the family. He will sit, stay and fetch now and we're working on giving the paw (amazing what a pup will do for a morsel of cheese or chicken Grin). I'm over the upset of his seller being a liar at this point, and we're determined just to enjoy him. The only real bug bear at the moment is the way he attacks your feet when he's excited. Any tps on stopping him trying to sever toes?

ditavonteesed · 17/10/2011 16:40

wear shoes Grin
cant believe we have had eric for 7 weeks now, feels like he has always been here. he is rapidly overtaking cherry in the size department so I think she will soon start to get fed up of him jumping on her head.
I know I take eric out too ,uch, I aim for 2 x 20mins, but today I really couldnt face taking them out seperatly so we went to the woods and were out for nearly an hour, none on lead or on road though, he was running around like a complete nutter the whole time as cherry was making him chase her into the depths of the woods, so nice to see, they have both been asleep since we got back.
First puppy class tonight.
