I have a twelve and a half year old belgian shepherd cross border collie. She's a sweetie, still thinks she's a pup and is very healthy, despite having severe malassezia which vet after vet haven't been able to resolve.

She has one problem, which is she climbs our greengauge tree, picks the fruit off and eats it. Hmm We normally fence it off before it fruits, but it caught us unawares this week, as its the other end of our long garden and we only realised it was fruiting when we saw her climbing it.

Since then she has once thrown up a small pile of greengauge stones. She seems fine in herself, no tenderness to her abdomen or throat, normal behaviour eating and passing stools ok.

BUT, she is behaving really strangely around her water bowl. We have one of those non-spill bowls and she usually lets us know its empty by grabbing it with her paw and kicking around the kitchen. Heard her do this last night, went it and she'd tipped the entire bowl upside down and it was full of water - so the floor was swamped. Since then she keeps on doing it. She looks like she wants to drink, looks at her bowl, then puts her foot in it and tips it up. (She looks anxious when she does this.)

I did try giving her a different (open topped) bowl with some water in and she took a couple of laps, but then went back and tipped up her own bowl again. I tried holding it up for her, just in case her throat was sore - but still no joy.

I put water in one of her stainless steel food bowls this evening after she ate and she did the same thing with that, only this time she actually put her foot in the middle of the bowlful of water. Confused

Initially I was concerned she might have either scratched her throat with one of the stones, or worse had one lodged - but this is contradicted by her eating two full meals perfectly happily. I don't think she can have eaten enough greengauges to cause an impaction and anyway she's still passing normal stools.

I am stumped. Bearing in mind the absence of any physcial symptoms, I'm now thinking it must be behavioural - but why? The only think I can think of is that we had a slug in the kitchen yesterday and I'm wondering whether it might have gone in the water bowl at some point and that's what's bothering her - but I assume if that were the case she'd be happy to drink from a different water bowl. (Her bowl has been washed up and refereshed several times since we evicted the slug infiltrator, so its not like its contaminated or anything.) She does look like she's peering at or into the water each time she does it, but she's by no means a fussy dog and has happily guzzled the water many times in the past, only for me to discover a piece of one the dc's dinner in there afterwards.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I am at a loss to know what to do, but will try the vets in the morning if the behaviour doesn't settle down.

Hi scartette, its been a tough old week that's for sure. She is so much better this morning though, which is really encouraging. She even went and fetched her buoy (refused to leave it on the beach when she was a pup and has played with it daily ever since) this morning - also asked to go out and then tried to roll to get her bandana off, so she's definitely on the mend. Smile

She's not exuding as much from the drain now either, bandana only needs changing every few hours instead of every hour which is also really good.

We go to Wexford every year - my family (dad's side) are from there, although we don't really keep in touch with most of them now. Dad built a house there, on the plot where his parent's house stood that's been in the family forever, before he died and we stay there. Ds1 is particularly attached to the place, having gone for the first time when he was just a few weeks old and lived there for a few months when he was about 18 months old. I've been there almost every year since I was three, so that'll be 39 years this year! Shock

MotherJack we use Dorwest Herbs Valerian Compound. We've used the scullcap and valerian tablets as well, but the compound is so much easier to use and definitely seems to chill her out more effectively. Its worth starting about a week before bonfire night as we've found the effect seems to be cumulative over a few days.

Might it be worth trying one of the desensitisation cds over a few months beforehand as well, so she's already used to some of the noises well before bonfire night? That said, we had fireworks a few doors away last night - they seem to be a year round problem these days. We used one of the CDs a few years back and it did help to get her to accept the longer-distance fireworks, whereas before she'd get really stressed every Saturday night when a local wedding venue had fireworks at their receptions. She's going a bit deaf now, so that helps as well of course.

I found when my lurcher was a pup the DAP spray on a bandana collar seemed to work more effectively than the diffuser. I think possibly their body heat warms it up and helps it to dissipate.

Thank you ever so much for that, Moosemama. I shall be looking into all of those suggestions.

So pleased to read that your dog has perked up a bit. Fingers crossed for Wednesday.

You're very welcome MotherJack. Smile

Thought I'd do a quick update - post op review appointment first thing tomorrow morning and we should get the biopsy results then too.

Meanwhile, we appear to have got our girl back. She's got the twinkle in her eye again and has been being really cheeky and trying to outwit me in the garden so she can roll and rub her neck on the ground. Hmm Grin She's also playing with her favourite ball again whenever she goes in the garden.

Its so lovely to see her happy and lively again, but it has made me realise that she's probably been ill for longer than we thought. I remember commenting a couple of months ago about how she still behaves like a pup at 12 years old, forever chasing her ball round the garden and asking us to play with her - but thinking about it, in the past few weeks she's not been interested in her ball much and that should have been a big indicator for us that something was up.

Am keeping everything crossed for her results tomorrow - probably won't sleep much tonight for thinking about it - well that and the fact that my dd (2.6) has a raging (39.5) temperature and is not at all well. It never rains but it pours as they say ....

i just came back to the doghouse to look for your thread moosemama . i thought it was today you had the results and was going to ask what vet said. fingers crossed you get good new tomorrow

yes, it never rains it pours and hindsight is a wonderful thing. it doesnt seem cut and dried with oldies, they have good days and bad days. we just have to do the best we can, which you have done.

will read your links as dog2 is a nervous dog and may find something to help him we havent already tried

chickchickchicken · 27/07/2011 22:17

good news

hellymelly · 27/07/2011 22:25

good luck for the results.Your poor dog! I hope it is good news.

MotherJack · 27/07/2011 22:32

I'm so glad your girl seems much better still, Moose. It's such an amazing sign. I'm hoping it's good news all round tomorrow.... my OldLady goes in to test for Cushings

ILoveYouToo · 27/07/2011 22:40

I just read your whole thread (never been to the doghouse before; always in aibu Blush). I'm so glad to read that your girl was correctly diagnosed and treated, and is recovering well. I hope she continues to recover well, and that you have a lovely holiday. Smile

moosemama · 28/07/2011 16:42

MotherJack hope she copes ok with the tests and they come back negative.

Thank you chickchick and ILoveYouToo.

Chickchick - I thought the appointment was Wednesday as well - dh told me the wrong day. Hmm

Well, the biopsy results aren't back - the vet said she'll call if they turn up today, but if we haven't heard by Saturday to call her.

Dh tried to draw her on what she thought the abnormal tissue might be and asked if it could be fibrosarcoma (which is what my old boy had, was misdiagnosed with and subsequently died as a result of having the wrong treatment) but all she would say was it could be a lot of things and best not to speculate, which I understand. Apparently there was a lot of it though and several separate pockets, which could possibly have been caused by the infection tracking. They tracked each pocket and thoroughly checked it, but couldn't find any sign of a foreign body - not even a tiny splinter or something. One thing she did say was that they have seen something similar before in a dog who was developing a tumour and the body's immune system reacted violently to it. So, still none the wiser.

They still can't understand the adhesions on the tongue either.

The wound is healing really well and all drainage is now clear and minimal - which is all good. She's being a proper scamp in the garden as well, employing all her guile to roll and scratch her neck when I'm not looking and refusing to come back in the house unless I play a game of ball with her first. Can't believe it was only a week ago today she went to the emergency vet appointment - amazing how quickly she's bounced back. Smile

Dh was really late to work because the vets were running really late, despite it being 9.30 am. Apparently they had two emergencies, one dog that had eaten ant powder and it was touch and go - they stabilised him and rushed him off to the main vet hospital where my dog had her op and another that had just collapsed with no warning. I am so Sad for those owners, have been thinking about them all day and hoping it all turned out ok in the end for them both.

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 28/07/2011 17:47

just found this thread moose read all of it and I am so pleased your girl is back to herself again.

These dogs of ours know how to scare us dont they?

I have to be careful with my boys immune system. We were at vets today for a check up and kennel cough vaccine. He needs his booster but will get it over the course of a few weeks due to his previous problems. It is like having little toddling children all over again. The worry!

Hope the biopsy results are back for you very soon.

bumpybecky · 28/07/2011 21:48

I am glad that she's feeling better :) hope the results are good when they eventually get to you

moosemama · 29/07/2011 09:24

Thank you Coffee. GSD hugs are some of the very best kind.

My first ever dog was massive, long haired, big boned, GSD who we found abandoned and about ready to die in the park. She was absolutely the most special dog we've ever had and instrumental in me getting over agoraphobia, partly because I had to walk her and taker her to the vets and partly because everywhere we went people seemed to flock to her.

I nursed her back to health, through a plethora of awful health problems caused by neglect and starvation and she was with us for 7 years. We eventually lost her to cancer Sad. Vet reckoned she was 'at least' 14 by then, though, so she must have been around 7/8 when we found her.

She was famous at dh's university, where she was so well behaved and quiet that she lived in uni accommodation with him for 18 months without them ever finding out. Grin Whenever we have contact with anybody from back then (20 years ago now) the first thing they ever do is ask about her. Grin

OP posts:
moosemama · 29/07/2011 12:27

Vet just called ....

....... and its not cancer!

Apparently its an unusual type of cellulitis, suggestive of an infection caused by a foreign body, such as a splinter. She needs another couple of weeks on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and should be fine. Am picking them up this evening.

She finished her last course of abs on Wed evening, was really itchy with her ears and feet (malassezia yesterday) so we gaver her a prednisolone and she woke us up this morning at 6am howling - which isn't like her at all. She needed to go out for a wee, so I think that could have been the steroids. She has to come back off them now as they are contraindicated with the antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, so we have to do a malasseb spot bath and treat her ears and feet with surolan until she finishes all the other drugs.

She's been very quiet today though - nowhere near as lively as yesterday, so I've booked her back in at the vets tomorrow to get her checked over just in case, but am hoping its just because the antibiotics were finished too soon and she just needs to get back on them asap.

Thank you everyone for all your kind wishes and support. I am so relieved I don't know what to do with myself! Grin

Moose , soooo pleased about your positive results to,day. Give that dog a big hug from everyone ! You must be so relieved! I swear, dogs are as much a worry as kids sometimes. Especially as they cant tell you whats wrong and its a guessing game. At least you will be able to enjoy your holiday now. When are you stting sail for these shores? For some reason I thought you had already gone -but obviously not with daily dog updates etc.Have a great time anyway. How great to be able to take your dog with you also. I'd love to be able to do that.
