Why do people pay top dollar for dogs that are called cockerpoo, labradoodle etc etc

Always a question I have been curious about.

People pay hundreds of pounds for these so called 'designer' breeds when in fact, the are just mongrels!

lol at bitchie. and wes-on lol.

one of my doodles shedded like mad. i always thought it was ralph. turns out it was tom. since tom has gone the excess fur has vanished.

PC our doods are 2nd generation, so thats why the litter has huuuge variation in coat types. if you backcross a 1st gen doodle with a poodle, then the coats are more likely to be poodle over lab/wirey, and low shedders. but again can still vary.

was stopped today by an old man outside the newsagent who asked if ralph was a labradoodle. bearing in mind he has recently been clipped and doesnt like most doodles do. turns out at the mans gun-club one of the members has a doodle. very hardworker but 'mad as a box of frogs'. i laughed and had to agree as they are a bonkers mix up, very playful, very energetic, intelligent, fast to learn but v v bouncey (think of tigger from winnie the pooh and you have my ralph in cartoon form lol)

Should have paid more attention in biology....'back cross' had me thinking for a bit.
I do have a tiny prejudice that says that a cross/mutt is healthier than a purebred.

I say that with my DH. He is from Cumbria, and I am from Essex, so the DC are very strong and healthy due to mixing of the gene pool

I didn't pay ££ for our JRT/ Spaniel x (Jack Daniels Grin ), just a token to the lady I got her from to help cover her costs. I didn't think anything of it but when we went to the vet he said "wow, did you have to travel a long way to get her?" I said, "Um, no, 2 miles". But it made me think that these kinds of dogs seem to be increasingly valuable nowadays and I am always aware that she might be a theft risk.

To be honest, I'm sure there's more than just the 2 breeds in there. She's basically a common or garden mutt. Grin

We have no idea of the pedigree of our rescue pup (probably mostly retriever of some type) but he meets all of activate's criteria and cost a donation to the SPCA (Canada's equivalent of the RCPSA).

We meet lots of lovely dogs, pedigree, cross breed and mutt and I don't think any are better than any other. It's all about the individual personality of the dog and their family. I find all the stupid names irritating - what is wrong with saying you have a poodle/Labrador cross? All the new names just seem incredibly twee to me.

Someone who lives next to me has a StaffiexChow who is 12.

Hullygully · 26/06/2011 09:21

Just in case anyone is interested - when we went ot get our labradoodle, the woman asked us who it was for and we said our daughter. She then recommended a goldendoodle instead as she said they are loads calmer and will lie about being cuddled. So we went home with ours, and she does indeed lie down unless out or playing in the garden. And she doesn't shed.

Apart from the poo-rolling.

A friend has a Shitzu/Jack Russell I cant remember what she called it but it wasn't a Jack Shit.

BettyTurnip · 26/06/2011 14:00

Grin at Jack Shit.

The best/worst has got to be a Shitapoo.

You also have to remember that lots of the puppies born don't have the required characteristics - a labradoodle with the labrador coat not the poodle one, for example. # guesses what the breeders do wtih them

I keep inventing imaginary crossbreeds in my head. I like the sound of a CockerShit.

MotherJack · 26/06/2011 17:51

Has anyone bred a Peke-poo yet? Perfect for entertaining babies...

SoupDragon · 26/06/2011 17:58

Actually I'm a bit Sad Our old lab is clearly not going to be with us much longer. I dread being without a dog and was thinking about a labradoodle as a possibility as I am a developing a mild allergy to dogs it seems. (Odd seeing as I'm over 50 and have had dogs most of my life) Didn't realise they were so expensive though!

birdofthenorth · 26/06/2011 18:40

I paid a fortune for my cross-breeds because I wanted no-moult allergy free mutts that are good with children. That and the fact they are VERY cute. The initial price of a dog is nowt compared to the lifelong food, insurance, grooming costs etc however!

misdee · 26/06/2011 18:55

seeker as a doodles coat isnt set until they are fully mature, you cant tell what coat they will end up with.

when we picked ralph he had a smooth coat. by the time we bought him home he was a scruffy thing, now he has a poodle type coat and recently had to be clipped.

when we chose ralph
around 9 weeks old
looking a mess

clipped!!

I have three Labradoodles, they are not Mongrels, Mongrels are dogs of unknown origin/backgrounds, my dogs are deliberately crossbred from parents chosen for their health and temperament. I have five gen pedigrees (which I can verify) for all of them. I am proud of my Doodles!

Anyone looking for a Labradoodle puppy should be looking for a nice even hip score from both parents (the breed mean score is currently 13 so below this is good), elbow score not above 1/1 =1, current clear BVA eye test and at least one parent tested PRA Clear (further info on the Optigen website explaining the circumstances where carriers may be allowed to be used in a breeding programme but at least one parent should be clear).

Further info on good Labradoodle breedingcam be found on the Doodle Post forum and of course the Labradoodle Trust is also a fantastic source of information.

I personally would like to see bad breeding (of any breed orcrossbreed) brought to an end and truely believe that this would have the greatest impact on dogs in shelter/rescue.
