Exactly what it says on the tin really. Kings idea, that we have a thread where we can all come and ask for help, advice, support or just to vent and that the much more experienced people will come and help us out :)

Our puppy came home on Sunday. So far so good. All wees and poos have been done outside, she eats well, is playful, content and after just a couple of days she is coming to her name. She happily sleeps all night in the crate without crying! She is 10 weeks old tomorrow. I keep waiting for the relapse!
Today I tried to put the lead on her to let her get used to it a little....she hated it. Cried, yelped IMMEDIATELY. I removed it and the poor little pup was so sad. How do I get her used to it? She has her second jab on Friday and I would like to begin short walks as soon as I am able. All advice greatly received.

belindarose · 16/08/2011 21:19

Congratulations! I guess just keep putting the lead on around the house to desensitise her. Did you try feeding her with it on? She sounds lovely! What is she?

SwearyMary · 16/08/2011 21:23

She made a huge fuss right away. Clearly didn't like it. Maybe I ought to put it on and let her trail it, without the lead being held?
She is a border collie/fox coloured lab cross and utterly gorgeous, she is all black!

PippiLongBottom · 16/08/2011 21:31

You know with the insurance? I have been looking at the lifetime cover rather than the cheaper one that only covers each condition for up to a year. I have found cover at £14 odd for the top level but wondered whether you'd bother with that or just go with the one that only covers them for a year? Confused

belindarose · 16/08/2011 21:57

Don't know what to do about insurance either. We have some cover with our bank account, but needs to be neutered, microchipped etc and that obviously isn't done yet.

Sweary, she sounds gorgeous! Yes, leave the lead dangling around the house. That's what I've read anyway. Ours is happy like that (likes to chew it - probably a potential problem, but better than being scares I suppose).

We're going on holiday on Thursday and a friend is having puppy. Due to the circumstances of getting him, we'll have had him for less than 2 weeks before he goes away again. I'm really worried about it. The friend is sensible and has a springer herself. Her dog will be away. I'm just aware that she obviously won't do things exactly as I would and she's doing such a huge favour. I'm going to write out what we do with hand feeding, kongs, crate, training etc, although DH thinks I'll sound bossy and neurotic. It would be awful if we came back to a badly behaved or frightened pup.

Today's top success, he'll now 'leave' his kong stuffed with dinner until I say 'take it'. He was really jumping and grabbing for it before. Now just sits and waits! Today's sad moment, DH wandered off saying 'I'll give up, he just ignores me'. He does seem to, actually, but I got them to spend time together without me in the evening and it sounded like it was going nicely. He has been exactly like that with DD, to be honest. Would give up on tears/ bedtime/ mealtimes really quickly as if I was the only person who could do it. I do have interminable patience, so can cope with things for longer. I really want them to bond as I don't want this to be just 'my dog'.

DD wanted to 'be' puppy at bedtime. I had to tell her to 'sit' and pretend to feed her treats. Then she wanted to 'poo outside'. I drew the line...

Happymm · 16/08/2011 21:58

SweatyMary, I once had a border terrier who struggled with the lead. I started off with just a piece of string attached to his collar, then went up to ribbon, thin rope etc, that he just trailed around the house with, without me holding it. Then when happy, I occasionally picked it up to play and on and on, till I could walk around the house, then slowly went up to a lead and walking outside.

Good luck :)

Right, help required now!

Devil pup has decided to bark at anyone and everyone she doesn't know, which has included a lady walking her toddler, the butcher, who hand fed her lamb mince Hmm, and the guy who came to give us a quote for painting the outside of the house. Also my DD's bike helmet....

Tried doing the oh silly Billy sing songy voice etc etc. In the end had to tell her to be quiet as barked all time painter here....wanted to tell her to STFU!

I am sitting here with my lovely new puppy laying by my feet Grin Grin Grin

He has been absolutely fab since we got home, so well behaved and loving and gentle, I feel so lucky (but am expecting things to go wrong tomorrow lol)

My problem for today though is how can I get him to pee or poo?
He pooed and weed in the car about 3.30 when I was bringing him home, and since then nothing, except a possible wee about 7ish. I'm not sure about this one, my son said he thought he squatted in the garden then, but wasn't close enough to see properly. Definately no poo though.

There have been no accidents in the house at all yet, but I would like him to go before I put him in the crate for the night. He has eaten and drunk loads Confused He is not constipated.

He has decided that the sofa is where he likes to sleep so I don't know how the crate will go tonight Blush

tooearlytobeup · 17/08/2011 07:38

Last night didn't go well Sad. He was upset, and had liquid poo all over his crate. He had walked though it and the crate was covered.

We also had a wee and a poo in the house last night. He has gone in out of choice now though, so hopefully hasn't been put off it too badly.

House training is definately going to be a challenge.

He has been really gentle. No niping or biting so far, just a little bit of mouthing, and he has only barked if he has been put in the kitchen behind the gate, or last night in the crate.

He is absolutely fantastic, and has slotted right in Grin

belindarose · 17/08/2011 07:55

Seems like liquid poo is common at first. My vet said to give small meals of rice, potato, egg or chicken and NO dairy until it's better. Hope your day goes well.

aliciaflorrick · 17/08/2011 08:05

Morning all,

I think Monty has turned a corner with us. No crying and howling when he went in the crate last night, slept till 7.00 this morning (thank goodness because the 5.30 - 6.00 starts were killing me), took himself outside to the loo after breakfast and then went back into the crate to eat a chew of his own accord. I can't believe it, he hated the crate when he arrived last week.

He's becoming more puppified every day so less quiet and much more bouncy which is lovely to see. He loves the kitten and the play together all the time and he chases DS2 around the garden.

If he can get on top of the toilet training I'll be very happy, my last puppy (18 years ago) was house trained within a couple of days, Monty is going on for a week now and still comes indoors to do a wee if he can.

I can't wait to take him for walks but still have a couple of weeks left before second set of vaccinations.

Verahaspurpletwuntypants · 17/08/2011 10:06

Had a clean crate this morning! I got up and let him out at 3, he did a wee and poo.

I swear pup thinks I am obsessed with his poo. Now he comes to me, demands a fuss and takes me to it.

tooearly our pup had a bath in the morning for the first few days.

alp · 17/08/2011 11:12

tooearly we had the same for the first few mornings too.

Pup was at dog sitters yest as I was visiting family for the day. She seems to be wired this morning! Not sure if she's happy to be home or thinks we are one of her playmates from the dog sitters!

Hopefully a woodland walk will sort her out.

I've also dine something I said I'd never do - I've bought chicken livers to make liver cake.

I am truly going dog crazy.

tooearlytobeup · 17/08/2011 16:30

My husband has been in charge today as I had to work, and the pup has been a star! Wees and pos outside, no accidents inside Grin (yet)

He's sleeping in his crate next to me with the door open, because the kids wouldn't leave him alone and he seemed tired.

He's had 1 solid poo this morning, but it's runny again now, so I don't know if I should stop the food he came with and give hm some egg instead?

I'm just going to arrange insurance and try to sort out training classes so will be scouring back in the thread for tips Smile

tooearlytobeup · 17/08/2011 17:19

Insurance done, and training classes booked Smile First vet visit booked for next week too to get him used to it. I cant wait now until I can take him for a walk!

clam · 17/08/2011 21:51

Sorry if I missed this tooearly but what breed is your puppy?

clam · 17/08/2011 21:53

Oops, scrap that, just seen he's a springer.

PippiLongBottom · 17/08/2011 22:11

My questions du jour are; How often should dogs be washed? Just if they are actually dirty? Mine smells really doggy. Perhaps given that he's dog, he should smell of dog? Grin

Also, is it ok for him to eat my chickens poo? He doesn't roll in it, he eats it. Confused

clam · 17/08/2011 22:25

Mine smelt doggy when we first got him. Then either it went, or I just got used to it. Showered him a couple of times, partly to get him used to it, but also coz I didn't like the smell.
Now we only do it if he needs it - burrowing in the blocked drain, for instance.

tooearlytobeup · 17/08/2011 22:41

Yes clam he is a springer Smile He has be
en home a day and a bit, has been bathed twice and still smells doggy!

tooearlytobeup · 18/08/2011 07:28

Woohoo! He has just woken up, leaving a clean crate Grin He did then wee on the floor and start to do a poo Sad but I'm being positive. At least as I saw him starting I could pick him up and put him outside, so he should get the message.

We had no accidents yesterday at all. The door was open all day to the garden and he just took himself out when he needed to go .

Last night however went badly. I ended up sleeping on the floor next to the crate as I couldn't take the noise anymore Blush

Verahaspurpletwuntypants · 18/08/2011 08:00

I got up in the night. Took pup out. Only did a wee. Was expecting a messy crate this morning. Put it was clean. Think it's a step forward. Pup is currently out in the garden in the rain.
Mmm wet dog smell, gonna have to get used to that.

ditavonteesed · 18/08/2011 08:25

pippi, I bath my border terrier whenever she starts to whiff, probably every couple of months. the breeder I am getting eric from told me she baths her dogs every week when they have been working or they wouldnt be allowed back in the hhouse.
Also Cherry eats chicken poo, used to think it wwas a problem but now think of it as less cleaning up to do.

tooearlytobeup · 18/08/2011 08:48

Vera I'm impressed! Mine is currently refusing to go out in the garden because it's damp Hmm
We just got the clicker out and tried to teach 'sit' He seemed to get it really quickly Shock Perhaps he isn't as thick as he seemed lol (running into glass doors, running up stairs then not being able to get back down etc etc)

Verahaspurpletwuntypants · 18/08/2011 08:57

:o tooearly, he's currently lying in the kitchen sulking and won't go out, but it is a bit torrential out there.
I think my pup is going to have to get used to the rain, because he'll have to be walked all winter and it rains a lot where i live. Although I may get him a coat when he's grown a bit more.
Good news about your pup learning sit. Still trying to teach that one. But we're doing signed signals too.
