New puppy help

After losing our Harvey a couple of weeks ago, Bailey (lab) has been really miserable.

We brought a new puppy home today (8 weeks) and he seems to be settling in well.

However, I have just shut him in the crate for the night and he is still barking and whining after nearly 15 minutes.

Should I leave him or let him come out? I know if I let him come out he will think it's ok, but not sure how much longer I can put up with the noise.

He has slept for short 10 minute naps just on the kitchen floor this afternoon and not eaten much.

I gave him a couple of treats in the crate and have put a blanket over the crate and turned off the light.

Any suggestions welcome

i out our pup in crate but at foot of my bed on the first night. before bed rubbed him down with the towel that came from his kennels so it smelled of his mum. when he made a noise at night I just said soothing things but didnt get up to him and he was ok. A couple of nights of that then he was in kitchen in crate, and it worked out ok.

Jennytailia · 13/06/2011 10:53

My pup does a poo in her crate everynight, regardless of whether she has just done one before bed or not. In fact I have only just got her to poo outside during the day instead of holding it all in for the night.

I have added an extension to her crate so she can get used to pooing in the extension instead of her crate and eventually I will remove the extension. But not for a while as she still sometimes chooses her crate instead of the extension.

Alp - our puppy was 7.5 weeks when we got him, just over 2 weeks ago. And he yelped at 3am the second night so I let him out quickly and quietly with no fuss then back in crate (as I thought first few nights away from his mother and also could he hold his bladder that long) and then 3rd night he also did similar. After a few nights it went to 5:30 ish then 6 ish etc. Now 6:30-7:15 but he wees in his crate still. Never pooed. It depends - if you have had enough of clearing poo you could always take her out for first few days. Also what time are you feeding her? Ie how long before bed?

twojues · 13/06/2011 13:26

I wouldn't mind him pooing in the crate if he was quiet all night. I don't cope with sleep deprivation very well

My main issue is I don't want pup to be disturbed/distressed and that's why shes pooing. I dont mind scooping a poop but when it's spread everywhere I assume it's because she's distressed.

I went out today for about an hour and left her without the divider or blankets and there was no poop. She was crying when we got back but I don't know I'd that's because she heard us or it was going on that long.

I put her food in there and she hops in and out and we've closed the door and fed treats through the bars.

Tonight I might leave the crate 'big' so I'd she needs to pop she can I don't have to wash loads of dog bedding.

Kingsroadie- I've been reading your posts and am pleased there is someone with a similar aged pup here so we can compare notes. Also as you've had yours with you a couple of weeks its like a little view into the future Wink

So for hijack OP! Blush

alp · 13/06/2011 13:32

Twojues- I don't know if she's quiet we are lucky the utility room is on the other side of house to our room!

Happymm · 13/06/2011 13:40

Alp, we're the same as you, with the utility room being on diagonally opposite side of house, so my boasting saying that our 10wk old lab sleeps through, maybe us just not hearing her! DS's room is closest but tbf he'd sleep through a rocket launcher going off in his room.

Have a new question ladies. What are you feeding your pups. Ours came to us on pro plan so we've continued that so didn't upset things. However, she has really bad breath! Any ideas?

shineoncrazydiam0nd · 13/06/2011 13:45

ALP - Don't feed her in the crate. If she is eating food then this will stimulate her gut - hence the pooing. Also try making the last meal of the day early-ish. My 19 week old is fed for the last time at 5pm. I also have only ever fed her twice a day and a lot less than the manufacturers recommend as they just don't need heaped bowls of food three times a day..

Nospringflower · 13/06/2011 13:54

Can I join in?! We have a 10 week old border collie and we have been lucky with her sleeping quietly all night. What I was wondering is how you make the transition from taking the puppy out to pee / poo at regular intervals to them 'asking' to be let out? How long does it usually take for puppies to be able to do this? Thanks if anyone knows.

Happymm · 13/06/2011 14:11

Course you can! We have a right big group of new puppy parents going on! All 10wks or so!

Our lab already whines to go out for poo. However, she really doesn't care about pee and does it wherever she is at the time, even right next to me, or an open door, or as in Kings case, on the sofa next to DH! Think pee is too difficult and immediate IYSWIM. From what I've read, can be 6months or so Shock before they crack it, maybe longer!

Kingsroadie · 13/06/2011 14:48

Happy fish4dogs (think you know that anyway)

New puppy owners, here is a link to our thread with quite a few new owners on it: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_doghouse/1231418-Oh-please-help-I-feel-like-a-failure-new-puppy-has-regressed We could go the whole hog and start a new thread I suppose so it's all in one place..?

alp - glad to "help" Grin!

Nospring - jealous of puppy not weeing in crate or whining early! No asking to be let out here - think it takes a while for them to get that... No idea how long though. Ours has briefly gone and looked out of the back glass doors and then walked away and each time I have run over and grabbed him and he has done a poo (or wee maybe) so god knows what would have happened if I hadn't done that!

Shine - 5pm - hmm, I am feeding my puppy a lot later - between 8 and 9. No poo problems and he was being sick a bit of bile first thing (common in puppies with empty tummies as can't handle the acid) so I am thinking perhaps best if I leave it then? But he doesn't have any pooing issues in crate and goes til 7 ish.

Nospringflower · 13/06/2011 14:51

6 months - will be needing Wine. She has never done a poo in the house but I suspect thats just been luck (she is outside a lot) and only pees once every few days but I dont have any sense of her 'getting it'. Looks like I'll just need to wait until she starts whining.

twojues · 13/06/2011 14:54

Koda whines at the door to go out. He's great at seeing pooing outside. Had an accident overnight last night.

I've spoken to the breeder who has suggested a kong with peanut butter spread round the inside for bedtimes. Like others have suggested it's making the crate a nice place to be rather than a punishment.

I am determined to crack it, I just hope it doesn't take too long!!

Our retriever puppy is now 13 weeks old. He still wakes at a ridiculously early hour (between 5 and 6, usually nearer 5). When we first got him we let him yap until 6.30, but that meant that we were not getting any sleep anyway and he made a right mess of his cage.

Now, as soon as he wakes up, one of us lets him out for a pee/poo. If it's very early we put him back into the crate with some toys and an old shoe of mine, with some of his dry food shaken into the toe area. That way he tends to be quiet until it's time to get up properly. His crate is always clean now.

But I am looking forward to him sleeping through until 6.30 or even 7am!

Nospringflower - In terms of 'asking' to go out - if the kitchen door is shut he will sit by the door or start snuffling around the floor when he wants to go. When he does that we have to be quick and let him out, because occasionally he does still do a pee on the floor. Very rarely though.

DH and I both work mainly from home so the dog has rarely been alone during the day. We have started leaving him for an hour or so, locked in his cage, and when we get back we can hear the yapping from outside. But he'll have to get used to it.

Spamspamspam · 13/06/2011 16:18

Limburgs - I am wondering if your puppy's crate is dark enough? Until 4 nights ago my puppy was going into the crate at about 11.30/12.00 and waking up at 5.00 ish sometimes 6.00. I had two fleece blankets over her cage and thought this was enough. For the last four nights I have moved her to a much darker room and put the two fleece blankets plus a very dark duvet cover over the whole crate and she has so far slept much longer than before (touching wood!). She is a little older than yours at 14 weeks but thought I would mention it. She is going in at about 10.00 - 10.30 and two out of the four mornings I have woken her at 7.00! I think the bin men woke her today at 6.45 as she barked (but it wasn't her I need attention/poo bark, it was her "what is that outside" bark) she then settled down straight away but I was getting up anyway so took her out at 7.00.

twojues · 14/06/2011 06:10

Yippee!!! Coda went to bed at 10.15 with a kong with a bit of peanut butter around it

He whined for about 10 minutes and I didn't hear him again until 5.45!!!!

He had wee'd in his crate but I think he probably slept in the pen area rather than in the crate

He is very lively now so looks like he slept well

Fingers crossed we've cracked it

Well done twojues! Breakthrough! :)

twojues · 15/06/2011 06:57

Well he barked and cried all night last night except for an hour!!!

I have made the crate really cosy and have a playpen round it as well. I don't shut him in the crate, but do in the playpen. He has a bed in the crate and one in the playpen plus a warm wheatbag, a cuddly, a blanket.

But he won't go in there at all!!! Even to sleep during the day, he just sleeps Anywhere but there. I have tried moving him in to it once he's asleep but he wakes up and comes out.

I try to feed him in the pen, but he's not really eating very much at all. I've tried sitting in the pen, getting him to go in the crate with treats. He fell asleep at my feet in the pen this morning, but as soon as I moved he came out.

Heellllpp, I need some sleep. In think he would still bark and cry even if I slept next to the pen at night.
