Crate Training at Night - advice needed on letting 8 week pup out for loo?

Kingsroadie · 31/05/2011 06:17

I was about to post this on another thread but realised how long it was so thought it better to start my own:

We're also going through the new puppy/crate training experience (hence me being awake now!). We only got him on Sat and he is 8 weeks today. Have made the crate cosy with a blanket/bed inside and blanket over the top, a toy and blanket smelling of his mother/litter, one of my t shirts, a nylabone and a small ticking clock. I have been getting him used to the crate by feeding him in there, giving him treats and a special one if he manages to stay inside for approx 1 minute (have been walking away and waiting and coming back and treating), which I have built up to slowly. He isn't too keen on being shut in still though but will have to learn this morning as I will need a shower!

Last night he was exhausted and asleep by just before 9, but I woke him up after a short nap to play with him and try and keep him awake a bit longer (is that mean?!) so he slept better during the night. I had to take him out a couple of times before he would wee but once he had I sat with him and yawned and licked my lips and he settled down and I put him in his crate and stroked him and he drifted off at about 10:10ish. I then fully covered the crate and had the radio on low. No whining.

He then woke at just before 2. After last night we had decided to take him out (last night he was up at 12:50 (my daughter had a nightmare so I suspect he heard her) , 3:30 and 5:45 (which seems to be when he wakes for the day. We left him but after about 15/20 mins of super barking we went down as we suspected he might need the loo. Which he did, every time he did a wee and twice a poo). He did a wee immediately and I took him back inside and put him in his crate with door open and my hand, yawned and he settled, did same routine. He then woke at 3:30. I thought it wasn't a desperate for the loo cry but a lonely cry but my husband said I should go down in case (think he weed a little last night in crate first time we left him to cry). I did and he did a wee but a tiny one he clearly didn't need. He was harder to settle this time - kept coming out and sitting on my to sleep. But I put him in crate with my hand and he fell asleep pretty quickly so I did the same routine and left him. He has just woken up at 5:45 and done wee and poo.

What are people's thoughts on this? I believe at 8 weeks puppies can only really hold it for about 4 hours? Is that correct? Also he has only been here three days so will still be missing his pack. I think last night I should have left the second wake up, making only one during the night for me! (Am slightly wary as he has a big bark for a little puppy and our house is open plan so you can hear it quite well upstairs and I would rather my daughter wasn't woken up - she is 18 months! But I think I will have to let him bark soon for this to work...) Any advice greatly appreciated - thanks so much!

Pick up our lab tomorrow morning-will be here begging for help Friday!:)

LimburgseVlaai · 02/06/2011 07:58

Luxury! He slept until 5.15 this morning! Hope it will gradually get better. Other than the early mornings he's great though.

Have fun Happymm - it's almost as scary as bringing your first baby home isn't it.

Had my pup a week now, and she goes through the night without crying now, usually 11-6.

She does however poo in the tray I have put in her crate, but she would do that whether I took her put or not as that is the only place she'll go.

Kingsroadie · 02/06/2011 13:29

Limburg - great news! I got 11-6:40 - was sooo pleased and woke up worried something had happened. Then he started to make noises and rushed out and did a wee and a poo immediately. No more grace period for him now though as I know he can do it Grin.

Long may it continue and fingers crossed it does!

Now trying to get him to stop jumping and nipping my 18 month old. He is learning already actually which is good. He knows sit and down and am teaching off and stay, all using a clicker. He is getting better and if I yelp for her and look at him he gets off and sits looking up at me. He's a real sweetie and has been fairly quick on the uptake so far.

Have had a wonderful day with our beautiful lab puppy :o She's so lovely. Has been good with the kids, not too much biting, and has done all her business outside! Has also managed a couple of sleeps in her crate with door shut, though now asleep on my lap Blush So, first night awaits! Wish her and us luck :)

Happymm · 03/06/2011 08:35

Well....that was crap! Up howling from 4am! Took her out and she wee'd, put her straight back in crate with no fuss and just had to listen to her howling from then on! :( She may have been hungry, as didn't really eat yesterday, but, has had a really good breakfast. All answers/ideas on a postcard....:)

Kingsroadie · 03/06/2011 10:04

Don't worry! Ours did exactly the same on his third night (first night slept 10:30 - 4:30 am and I was so worried I hadn't heard anything I promptly went down to check and woke him up - so my fault and then he was up. second night he woke at 1, 3:30 and then up at 5:45, third 2, 3:30 and 5:45). Fourth night 11-4:10 and back into crate and howled for 2 hours before I deigned to go and get him. Then 5th night he slept 11-6:40, and same last night. Don't worry - chances are that once he settles in a bit he won't be scared to be left and will sleep better. Hang in there and it will probably improve soon - I think that was pretty good for a first night! And it is a lot quicker than a newborn to get to sleeping through...

Just give it time Happymm - you did the right thing and remember it is only day one. How old is puppy? Mine was 10 weeks old when I got her and it took us about 7 days to get her into a routine of going to bed at 11.00pm and getting up at 7.00am. In the beginning I had a few nights where I got up for her and did exactly what you did but gradually they have stopped and in the last 7 days she has only got me up once at 5.30am where she was desperate for wee/poo and I did as you did!

Re- the eating, my puppy was a bit hit and miss for about a week after she came here.

Puppy has been her for 23 days and still settling into a routine.

Happymm · 03/06/2011 12:51

She's only 8wks,and was one of 10pups so used to lots of company I guess. Currently asleep in crate with door open, am feeding her in there too,so don't think it's the crate she's objecting to so much. Crate has cover, but only 3sides so may put a blanket over the door tonight to reduce light-I must say, it was quite light at 4... Husband managed to allow her to poo in the sitting room, walk through it and get poo footprints through rest of house-donought! Doesn't quite understand what watch the dog means!:o

Spamspamspam · 03/06/2011 16:46

Gross!! I only had about 10 accidents indoors with my pup and they were allways when someone else had been told to watch her - literally for fifteen minutes whilst I quickly went and did something - the something I was doing was usually for the person I had asked to do the watching! In the end I confined pup and person to kitchen or garden only if I wasn't watching Grin

Happymm · 03/06/2011 18:23

Sounds like a jolly good plan! Husbands always seem to make extra work :o She's had another good day, with no further accidents and has eaten more today so fingers crossed for tonight!

Kingsroadie · 03/06/2011 19:11

Our pup still has accidents inside - two wees today - I have usually been distracted and it is just after he wakes up or something. Has has taken himself outside numerous times (as I have been keeping the door open) and done both wee and poo out there so he is doing very well really. He weed because he was asleep outside and heard me come in, ran in to see me and then needed the loo but perhaps got confused as I was there and he had just woken up etc.

Happy yes I cover the crate completely with the very light mornings...

Will def do that tonight then! She's currently spark out with no chance of waking her-the kids have hardly let her have a moment's peace all day bless her. Have had to bath her as well, as dug up half my herb garden and was covered in mud! What time should I wake her to play some more to make her so tired tonight? And should I give her another snack?

Happymm · 04/06/2011 07:15

Well, would you believe it? Went from 10.30-6.15! Clever girl! I did give her a late night snack, and completely covered her cage as suggested! Thank you all. Long may that continue! And just to top off her clever dog status, she's just taken herself out for a poo. :o Happy mummy indeed!

Kingsroadie · 04/06/2011 08:48

That's fab! Our pup had a bad night last night - my husband was on puppy duty as I do it all week and he is away today and tonight. He put the puppy to bed and he started whining immediately which he hasn't been doing with me. Then took ages to settle and woke at 2:20 as well I think. Eventually I said take him for a wee and he did one and back in crate but barked a lot I think and was up at 6:15 ish and has done 2 wees inside (with husband not me). Fingers crossed he is better behaved again for me tonight...
