Biting on the lead

I think that should get a metal chain. I read that I should apply something horrible tasting to the lead and thought that sounded a bit cruel (curry powder?) but I tried marmite. That experiment was a very messy failure and had a marmite dog.

Also, would someone direct me to the sardine-based home-made dog food recipe?

(9 month terrier)

Thank you.

You need to be patient with your dog. Every time they bite on the lead, stop, tell them to leave it and offer a treat (hold in front of their nose to start with so they want to let go). It shouldn't take long if you are consistent.

I know a fair few dogs who love the taste of marmite, so I wouldn't recommend using that as a deterrent.

I frequently walk my mother's dog, a rottweiler x golden retriever. He loves biting the lead and playing tug-of-war at the side of the road. I don't. What I'm doing with him is taking out a pocketful of treats and practising 'heel' as we walk to the park/woods/etc. It takes twice as long and I probably look a right twat, but he listens to me and I don't have to dread trying to haul him out of the road when he starts backing into the path of oncoming cars. (Lovely dog, beautiful temperament, he's just a little stronger than me is all!)

Also lots of praise when he's walking nicely to heel, and a sharp 'No' or 'Leave' when he's chewing at the lead helps. He turns the big puppy dog eyes on me, but I'm mean and won't give in to a tugging game!

I was advised to move my hand quickly down the lead from the handle towards the dogs mouth in a fast movement. I tried it but my pup carried on and nibbled my hands too!

So, when he bit the lead, I'd get hold of his collar and drop the lead. As soon as i'd dropped it, he wasn't interested in the lead at all!

Thanks. The marmite experiment was a spectacular failure. She loved it, she went madder than ever for the lead and she covered herself in marmite. She then tore around the house, leaving marmite stains at dog level on the white walls. It looked as though we had been victims of a malicious burglars who had smeared excrement around.
Any thoughts on the chain lead?
Very grateful for your advice which I am now following. :)
