Friend wanting to rehome a dog - reputable rescue wanted in Yorkshire area, Valhalla are you there?

I have a friend who is in love with my puppy, and is considering getting a dog, but doesnt want a puppy as she does work 3 days a week. We have rescues around this area, but I have heard bad things about them, so would prefer somewhere which comes with good references from an experienced person!
Ideally she would like an SBT as she loves their slighly bonkersoutgoing nature, and there are lots of them about needing new homes.
She does have a daughter who is 10 who lives with her part time, so dog needs to be child safe. There are also small kids next door.
Can anyone recommend a rescue in our area (can travel a little as have car)

Hiya, Val will obv know far many more than me, but I do know that Doris Banham has kennels in the South Yorkshire Area (and iirc Val rates them as a rescue). Whereabouts are you in Yorkshire, to help Val narrow it down if you don't want to drive too far - it's a big ol County!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 23/05/2011 11:52

we are in Pontefract so fairly central, just off M62/A1 and not far to M1 either, dont mind travelling, would be daft to miss the perfect dog for the sake of half an hour in a car

Have a look at Doris Banham then whilst you are waiting for Val to come along and give you some ideas Smile

GrimmaTheNome · 23/05/2011 12:22

Dogs Trust has a rehoming centre in Leeds

Vallhala · 23/05/2011 12:24

Doris Banham's a possibilty, yep, depends where you are.

There is one rescue in "West Yorkshire", naming no names, Wink that I wouldn't touch although it appears to have all the right credentials. Have found the owner to be a tad, erm, unreliable and questionable.

There's Clive at K9C, but can't find any details online for him to show you, will email him for a full rundown and dogs available. He's not someone who I've ever sent a pound/unwanted dog to, as you can imagine from my limited knowledge. but is on my contact list and often kindly forwards appeals for rescue and transport for me.

Jerry Green in Gilberdyke is a possibility - never dealt with them, just know a bit about the location! See on their website that they will "probably" homecheck Shock - ask them to is my advice, it's for the owner's benefit as well as the dog's, and if they won't, which is unlikely, walk away. Check their return to rescue policy - can teh dog return at any stage in his life? And check the no-kill policy.

Hull Dog Rescue rings bells in my mind, not for bad reasons but can't recall exactly why, do check them out too.

This is way out of my home ground, it's forrin! I have a great contact in the form of the owner of Yorkshire Animal Ambulance, she'll know far more than I. Boss-lady of the rescue I help out at is a Yorkshire lass and probably knows 'em all, the good and the bad, so am asking her too.

Had no.... nada, zilch, zero sleep last night so am amazed I've managed this much!!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 23/05/2011 12:31

Cheers Val, I think we have spotted a winner on Doris's website, called Diego, I cant believe how many staff/crosses there are on there. They seem to be the ultimate disposable pet Angry

Oh, Yorkshire Rose rescue, try them!

Vallhala · 23/05/2011 17:05

It's been suggested to me by Rachel, the lady half of the Cambs rescue, which I volunteer for and so I know this dog personally and think he's a super, scrummy little darling, that your friend might consider TOE

He's the absolute favourite of the rescue's regular volunteer (the lady in the first post), who would take him home in a heartbeat if her DH would allow a seventh dog.

Rachel's folks are up your way so she could combine a home visit with a trip up to see her parents on Wednesday and then bring Toe up for your friend to meet at a mutually convenient date soon afterwards unless they would prefer to come down to Cambs to meet him at the rescue.

Do give me a shout if your pal's interested please. :)

rogersmellyonthetelly · 23/05/2011 17:19

OMG, he is an absolute LOVE! look at that face (founding member of staffy fan club here)

He really is a lovely dog, I can promise you that.

I hope your friend will consider Toe. It would be good to get some happy news today.

If you read the menu of that forum you'll find the topic "Bud's had a turn" on the epilepsy part, about Buddy, a big white longhaired German Shepherd.

Not long after I'd got to know the rescue I had to make the awful decision to say goodbye to my own gentle giant of a longhaired white GSD, Shane. Shane had Degenerative Myeleopathy (DM), a terminal condition akin to human's MS, which left his back legs paralyed and would lead from there to any of a variety of problems and then his death. I had to make the decision to say goodbye as his suffering was beyond my ability to help and there was no cure. I was in bits, Shane was all I could ever have dreamed of in a dog.

Buddy's owner was my rock. Despite living miles away she was a frequent comforter with kind words, little tales about Bud. She understood how I felt as Bud, from all I understand, is just like Shane was. She sent me photos of Buddy - I had my virtual furry comforter in him.

Now J is having to make that same awful decision. Buddy is getting old now, he's epileptic and he can no longer walk, being reliant upon being carried or the use of a doggy cart wheelchair - the vet believes that he too may have DM. Buddy's dignity and strength are slipping and there is nothing that the vets, J, I or anyone can do. :(

I'm so so sad for them both, I can't put into words how anguished I am for J and for Buddy. Good news would be extremely welcome around here at the moment.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 23/05/2011 18:11

She is speaking to her ex husband about it as we speak - they share custody of their DD, and the idea is that on the days when she is at work (2X8 hour days and 1X4 hour day) that her ex H (who also wants a dog) will be able to go round and take the dog out for a walk/company so he wont be left alone for too long. I can promise he would have a very loving home though, can I check is he good with other dogs (ie my mad staffy puppy) as he will probably be spending time here aswell.

You mean like this? :)

Vallhala · 23/05/2011 18:34

The lady handling Toe is his biggest fan - anything you want to know about him, she's the woman to ask. :)

rogersmellyonthetelly · 23/05/2011 18:37

omg, he smiles too..... I love that staffy smile!

am I right in thinking that he loves his food? he looks quite well padded lol.

MotherJack · 23/05/2011 19:18

Oh, he's lovely!

Vallhala · 23/05/2011 19:47

Didn't think it would take you long, MJ. :o

Yes, he does love his food. He's a little tank, solid in that chunky Staffie way but not any fat on him. He's very sweet I have to admit, and loves everyone.

I can tell you now that if he is rehomed the volunteer who is with him daily and who was also his handler on that video clip will cry her eyes out.

chickchickchicken · 23/05/2011 20:27

Toe is lovely. he looks like a friends rescue sbt and seems to have a very similar temperament. he is a big softie too and loves to please.

he really is a TTRD (thoroughly tested rescue dog). some lucky person is going to have a fantastic dog with no worries about this temperament or training ability

MotherJack · 23/05/2011 21:09

Can you feel the jealousy, Val? Envy I so need a friend for my old lady - she hankers after other dogs... but I need the right one.... and Toe ain't it [sob]

MotherJack · 23/05/2011 21:11
