And here's the next unwanted dog I have to save from the pound...

Frankie is a 5 year old male. He's brindle with a splash of white, knows basic commands and calmly ignores other dogs when out on a long leash. He's energetic and affectionate and all of the things you could want in a family pet.

He probably WAS someone's family pet once.

But now he's in the pound and will be killed in there unless he's taken out to the safety of a rescue. He's got until Friday. :(

Pictures of this latest dog which I've been asked to... no, I WILL find a rescue place for, are on my profile.

Frankie's one crime?

He's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

:) :) :) :)

Only just read this! I asked them if Frankie was of interest to you when they said that Grace wasn't cat-friendly, but at the time I believe that you felt that he was too big. I'm SO glad you're considering him. :) Good luck.

I have some good news.... Lancs GSD Rescue has a potential home lined up already for the Shep and I've had an approach from someone whose sister has just lost their Chow to old age and would like, if assessments work in everyone's favour, to home the Chow X.

And I have HALF a transport run offered - from the South to Birmingham on Friday lunchtime. I just need to get a driver/s to take them the rest of the way to the rescue. The alternative is to start again and appeal for a series of drivers to take the two over the weekend.

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!

I am so glad Elvis has got a safe place to go to. I would have loved to have him myself

Val - what legs of the journey are you stuck for?

Vallhala · 18/05/2011 22:32

At the moment I have someone who can collect from Surrey and go as far as somewhere, as yet unknown, in Birmingham. It's the bit after, from there to a village between Preston and Lytham St Annes that I'm stuck for, although the rescue owner could possibly find someone to meet the transporter closer to the village.

It's all "forin" to me once past London!!

i am an hour south of birmingham so would be of no help on the friday as you have transport in place to birmingham. i do have friends in birmingham i could ask? they are retired so its possible they could help.

if you have to rearrange for the weekend i could transport from reading to birmingham along the m4/m5 route.

Vallhala · 18/05/2011 22:50

Thank you ever so much chick. I'll know more tomorrow pm - will be in the hospital best part of the day - so please can I get back to you then? Thank you,

good luck for this evening. hope it all goes well

Gonzo33 · 19/05/2011 16:10

Valhalla,

If we were back in UK hubby would have him in a shot.

By the way we're moving to Norwich when we do come back so I might be asking some advice re: dog rescues.

ChippingIn · 19/05/2011 16:32

OldBag - I hope you can & do have Frankie :) He's beautiful - I'd love to be able to take him, but I can't. I travel too much and don't have a garden

Vallhala · 19/05/2011 16:44

We have transport sorted!
We have dogs in emergency kennels so the bastards don't kill them!
We will have clean and sparkly dogs because the emergency foster-kennels lady is going to bath them before she hands them over to the first link in the transport chain tomorrow morning!
And we have our fingers crossed for OBWNB and Frank!

A few loose ends to tie up, fuel expenses for the transport volunteers to be found, a couple of calls here and there and then we're ready to roll and by tomorrow afternoon these guys should be in their foster home.

And then perhaps I can find time to hoover my house, clean the fishtank, clear the cupboard under the stairs, do the washing and my own paperwork and phone calls... and to get more than 3 hours sleep at night!

Thanks for staying with me and all the support everyone. Don'tcha just love it when a plan works out? :)

Oh! Oh! And I nearly forgot.... piccies of these two are now on my profile!

Vallhala, I could make a donation towards transport costs? I will PM you

Vallhala · 19/05/2011 20:25

Thank you ever so much. Blush Have pm-ed you as don't know how RHU work and who you might send a donation to, it wouldn't feel right for it to be sent to me personally.

chickchickchicken · 19/05/2011 21:02

I'm so glad it went well OBWNB. Hopefully Frank will be snuggled up on your rug before you know it Envy Grin

bumpybecky · 19/05/2011 21:33

awww dontcha just love it when a plan comes together :):)

chickchickchicken · 19/05/2011 21:39

Grin so very pleased it went well

Vallhala · 19/05/2011 21:41

Blush Aw... thank you OBWNB. I think THEY are fab!

chick, if you'd like to do that it would be wonderful, thank you. Dunno if you'd prefer to donate to Lancs GSD Rescue, who are taking Bonnie and Clyde or, as they look likely to be homed quickly and have no known issues which will need extra funding, whether you'd prefer to hold on and make that kind offer to whichever rescue I can find to take Grace as SBTs are of course hell to find rescue for and some funds to take with them can very much help rescue decide to offer. (Reason for this is that the rescue knows the SBTs, being so numerous and so much maligned, will stay in rescue for far longer than your average Labrador, crossbreed, Westie or whatever).

Gonzo, your first port of call might be the lovely, lovely Lyz at Hallswood. She's a star, as was her late husband and her commitment and care exemplary.

:) Happy to help if I can, just get thee over to the UK!

chickchickchicken · 19/05/2011 21:50

val - hard to decide. wish i could help them all. a friend has two lovely rescue staffies and it is very sad how long they can stay in rescue. her two are absolutely lovely and soft as anything. they dont bark, shed very little hair, good natured, great with their cat, great with kids, good with other dogs - what more could you want?

i would like to help Grace. it will only be small donation - so not enough for you to leave the country Wink - so can i send to you and you put it into the fund for Grace?

Elibean · 19/05/2011 22:11

Um, sorry to hijack, but Val...can I ask you about a gorgeous old boy on PFR website? I may need you to talk some sense into me - since PMing you before: we were thinking we should wait till loft conversion done, as builders/open doors/noise maybe not good for new addition to family. Also, we're away for 2 weeks in August so would be disruptive (although could probably get someone to stay in house with dog, at a push). Its REALLY better to wait till Sept when building and holidays are over, no?
Just...Red Charlie looks a lot like my old boy did, and has such a nice face...and is good with kids...help!

Vallhala · 20/05/2011 13:00

Thank you Chick, that's really kind. I feel awkward about accepting money and not being able to be seen to be honest, IYSWIM so shortly I'm going to ask Poplar Farm Kennels, the rescue I help at, if they wouldn't mind accepting any donations offered to the poundies I rescue on my behalf, via their Paypal or the PFK rescue account.

That way they can be able to vouch for the fact that X was received for so and so dog and see and confirm that it goes to the intended recipient, be that a rescue or to the person who drives the dog to the rescue in order to cover their fuel costs. Fuel's so bloody expensive now that folk can no longer offer to cover transport runs at their own expense, but not owning a car myself I tend not to realise HOW expensive it is.

Anyhow, I'm babbling, I'll ask PFK for their help and get back to you... meantime thank you very much.

At the same time I'll ask more about Charlie, Elibean, whom I'm more than sure Dave and Rachel at PFK would put a reserve upon for you when all the home visit and meet-up-with-Charlie-at-PFK stuff is out of the way. Certainly it would be better to wait til September - tbh, knowing Dave, I think he'd insist upon it wrt the building work. PFK will very often take back a dog of theirs when the owner goes on hols but yours would be very soon after Charlie had moved in this year if you were to adopt within the next few weeks, which would be of some concern to us.

For my part I can tell you that he's a lovely boy and steady and sweet natured. You saw on his thread that he'd gone on an 8 mile sponsored walk for PFK? Well, he was in the hands of my younger daughter for that walk, who was 13 at the time. He was as good as gold!

I'd advise that you drop Dave an email with a completed questionnaire C&Ped into it (questionnaire is on the website) and ask if you might come and visit Charlie. :) The questionnaire is scary even for me and wants to know all but the colour of your knickers but PLEASE don't be deterred... at least it shows that Dave and Rachel really want the best for their dogs and are trying to cover all eventualities for the sake of their new owners! Once you've got that over with you'll find them approachable and dedicated (albeit as mad as cheese, bless 'em!).

Tip: When visiting PFK, bring cake. Dog will appreciate a piece and Dave will be your best friend!!! :)

Will be back later to follow up, pm me if I can help in any way, have just been asked to help with finding rescue for two seperate dogs by 2 seperate MNers.

And I thought I was accused of putting people off of coming onto Doghouse and asking for help too!

(Note to self: Must try harder!).

OP posts:
Vallhala · 20/05/2011 13:06

PS Elibean you might like to add in your email to PFK that I've already mentioned your family and that you're the people Dave had asked me if I could if necessary homecheck or arrange the same as your home area was mine once. Otherwise I fear he may just say sorry, you're too far away.

OP posts:
Elibean · 20/05/2011 13:46

Hurrah! dh agrees, thanks so much Val for the tips and suggestions - tbh, I wouldn't feel ok taking on a new old boy and then having the house upside down/me stressed, it wouldn't be fair on him (or us, probably!). I didn't think they'd keep him till then, and wondered if it might not even be in his best interests - so hadn't really imagined this was an option.
I'll email Dave tonight - we'd love to go and visit Charlie one weekend, we're all agreed, so if Dave says yes, we're on Smile
Then again, if a lovely family wants him sooner and its better for him, so be it - till I meet him in person, I promise not to get too attached Wink
