My gorgeous spaniel has been spayed this morning and I wondered if anyone had any good tips for making her more comfortable when she comes home and caring for over the next few days. (The children have already been told to be sensible and calm when they come home from school!!!)

I think just quiet and calm and somewhere warm when she gets home until the anaesthetic has worn of and she is back to her usual self (24 hours in our case).

My dc had to whisper (oh the bliss) and totally stay out of the room her basket is in until the next day.

I offered my girl come plain rice and chicken on the evening after her op, and even fed it to her by hand (what a sap).

She needed some encouragement to go outside for a wee but apart from that it was all very straight forward.

I'm sure she will be fine, it's horrid though when they are at the vets. Hope you are doing OK.

Love the idea of whispering - I wonder if I could keep that going for a week!!! It makes you realise how much you love your dog when they are at the vets - we cannot wait to get her home and take care of her! Thanks for the tips - I have my rice and chicken ready to boil and have cleaned all her bedding etc and tried to make it super comfy....

ooooh

I washed all my girls bedding too and even tumble dried it so it came out all fluffy.

Hahaha no chance of getting a week of whispering though.

Make sure the stitches are strong! If they're sensible vets they'll look at the breed and work out that they need to do the stitching well!! It doesn't take long for them to completely forget that they have been in pain, so you'll be more concerned with how to keep the dog still and not jumping up/running round like a mad thing.

bumpybecky · 17/05/2011 13:30

my top tip would be not to let the dog roll in the mid on the way to the vet to get the stitches checked! vet gave us very a stern look.... Blush

mud! not mid

not sure what mid is, but bet she would have rolled in that too given half a chance...

When our lab was spayed, we put her in a t-shirt, so she couldn't get at the dressing/stitches. I have to admit that I even went and bought one from Asda, so it was pretty, instead of leaving her in an old one belonging to ds3. Blush It probably was a bit precious-first-dog.

Our lab was spayed about two months ago .

When she got home in the evening we left her in peace and quiet although I did offer her chicken and rice .She felt very sorry for herself.

Next morning she was wagging tail and looked OK.

Stitches were all internal and were advised about wearing a tee shrt if she started to lick wound we also got one of those collars from the vet just in case. Luckily she didn't bother too much with wound so no need for either.

No juming in and out of car , no going upsairs and out of water for 10 days .

Walked her round the block the next day and walked her everyday but no vigorous exercise - had to be kept on lead 10 days.

She went back to vet after a few days to see if wound healing , it was and never had to go back .

They do recover very quickly.

Hope she is home now and enjoyed her chicken and rice and her clean comfy bed too!

How's she doing today bubbles?

bubblesbabe · 18/05/2011 14:40

Thanks for your messages. She was v sad last night but slept fine and is better today - bit sad and tired but ok. Unfortunately the vet found that she had an ear infection and so that has been treated as well - poor old thing. At least its over and we're on the road to recovery :) xx

aw.

at least the vet spotted the infection and you can crack on with Rx.

She'll be back to normal in no time.

IlsaLund · 18/05/2011 21:10

Poor thing.

We had our lovely girl done a fortnight ago - she was really miserable for 48 hours - she just wanted to be left alone to sleep and took herself off into our other naughty dog's crate.

After 48 hours she perked up really quickly and the biggest problem was stopping her running around like an idiot while she still had stitches
