its pissing it down here (pardon the pun) took Peppa out to the garden for a wee, she cowered under a bush, and after 5 minutes shivering pathetically, I took her back inside where she promptly weed on the floor 3 seconds later.
Its obvious she needed to go, but as it rains rather a lot in the UK she needs to get used to having a quick widdle outside in the rain.

Hahahaha sorry nothing to add apart from my Staffy hates the rain and would leave it to the last minute to go.

I didn't take him out under a big umbrella. Not me guv.

please help, I'm sure you are all probably sick of my posts displaying my obvious ineptitude with a puppy, but I really need some suggestions. She did the same thing the other night at 2 in the morning it was raining, took her out, she cowered under the decking then came back in after 5 minutes and she weed and pood on the floor within about a minute of coming back in.

would a dog coat help? I can rustle one up on the sewing machine quite quickly if needed.

I don't know but am in exactly the same boat and was starting to think about the coat idea too; however other part of me thinks that it is something that they will have to get used to. It doesn't really help that it has been so dry, thus making rain seem like an odd event

sickoftheholidays · 09/05/2011 18:12

her coat is still only really thin and her little tummy is quite bare with just a couple of hairs sprouting, so I'm not surprised she doesnt like it! I'm whipping up a coat quickly and will test and let you know if it works!

do you stand outside with her? when mine were pups they would go out in heavy rain during the winter if i went out into the garden myself and stayed with them. if she has a regular place to go how about making a temporary shelter or using a large golf umbrella?

Elibean · 09/05/2011 18:56

I would go with her, the first few times at least.....just the noise of rain can be a bit scary/offputting, even to a young child, if its heavy.

I don't think succumbing to the umbrella idea would make for a life long habit, would it? Unless you kept it up for weeks...

chickchickchicken · 09/05/2011 19:34

Grin elibean - i never thought i would say to take an umbrella. was stuck trying to think of ideas. my pups were ok as long as i went out into the garden with them Smile i didnt make a fuss, just stood quietly freezing in the garden (when my oldest was i pup we took her in when she was only 5-6 weeks old, it was below freezing and we lived in the highest part above sea level in south wales. twas very cold and very windy. only a tourist would have tried to hold a brolly!)

excuse grammar, trying to multitask

Mine used to do this too. In the end I just got DH to had to stand in the rain for as long as it took. As long as you give in, it's worth hanging on for indoors (let's face it, pee in the rain or pee inside on nice dry carpet - which would you choose!). We praised her like mad when she went and then watched her like a hawk for the rest of the time she knew it was raining. Take a good coat, an umbrella and a nice hot drink is my advice! Grin

musicposy · 09/05/2011 21:57

Though I have to say we never did the 2am thing! We had puppy pads overnight...but I'm not sure I'd recommend them as I'm sure it took her much longer to hold on at night because they were there.

Scuttlebutter · 09/05/2011 22:27

You need to go out with her and STAY out there, with her, until she performs. At the moment, she has no incentive to wee in the garden, as she realises that if she cowers under the decking you will cave in and quickly take her back in where she can wee/poo in comfort. Dogs are not stupid but they do need to be shown clearly what behaviour you are rewarding. So every time you take her out the garden, go out with her, stay out with her, and lavishly praise/treat/reward whenever she wees/poos in the garden. She will then vey quickly make a positive association with the two.

And yes, I can recommend an umbrella, as we have the biggest jessies/drama queens ever here (3 greyhounds) who act as if a rainstorm is the end of the known universe. We keep a big brolly by the back door to the garden and we shoo them out and then go and stand resignedly by a flower bed, while sundry greys stand there looking sulky and mutinous (it's like having three teenagers!) till they eventually perform. When we eventually get back in the house, there's a great deal of huffing, and very pointed wrapping of delicate houndness in duvets. You can practically see the bubble saying "It's not FAIR..." One day I am going to come home and find them listening to goth music and painting their collars black....

My friends collie wee's in the plant pot if its raining as he doesn't like getting wet!

I suggest setting up a nice little arrangement in your garden with a sheltered area including chair, I envisage it looking like a small bus shelter, only with a more comfortable chair and not smelling of piss like many bus shelters do in this country, sorry went off track there, and having a big brolly ready by the door to make the journey to said shelter.
You could put up some nice remote lighting and maybe have a small watertight box for some biscuits out there too, although that might attract the foxes/rats/mad neighbours.
or....get a spaniel I had to dig mine out of the snow to get him in.

Definately an umbrella, big golf size one at the back door, stay outside using key word and a treat, over in seconds then back in!
