Buying from a puppy farm thread

Please see the poster named RosyJo's response today. Am I reading it wrong or is she really that stupid and cruel saying what she appears to be saying?

In a bit of a rush at the moment, will be back later when I've calmed down to see if I can make more sense of her post.

I'd have no problem with insulting someone who cares more about getting a pup in a particular colour than about their health and welfare Hmm.

So it matches their curtains?

bemybebe · 06/05/2011 15:31

I can understand 'being bothered' about the colour. Wink My very caring dh was dreaming about getting a chocolate labrador girl called Cocoa for years before finally she arrived.

I had rescue dogs for years before, mostly picked up from the street (I am a foreigner). It was very weird searching around for breeders and actually paying a good amount of money. I managed to find a few breeders with great passion for their breed (and colour Wink). One of them has no more than one litter a year (or a couple of years) is a fantastic trainer. She provides lifelong support to all her puppy buyers including a commitment to take the dog back AT ANY STAGE and refund the full amount paid, no questions asked. She is very well known in her field. Needless to say, she has waiting lists for all her litters.

bemybebe · 06/05/2011 15:35

Just to make myself clear, I will never criticize anyone for wanting a particular type of dog, colour, whatever, provided they do not harm anyone or anything in the process of obtaining their desired pet.

However, puppy farmers are just evil. Anyone buying from them are complicit in outright cruelty. Only some people don't realize and others choose to look away at all the appauling suffering that goes there.

bemybebe · 06/05/2011 15:40

Shock @ephiny link.
I thought you were exaggerating...

No, not different characteristics!! (Some people are convinced chocs are hyper and stupid. They are stupid mesays.) It is just one of those unexplainable things called 'preferences for no reason'.

Please do not misunderstand me, I am not saying there was any solid reason for wanting to have a dog of a particular colour. But neither this desire is invalid provided the person takes responsible steps in finding their dog from a well-researched and reputable place AND is committed caring for this dog for life.

Absolutely agree.

JaxTellersOldLady · 06/05/2011 19:31

I chose my puppies because of lots of factors, but their colouring wasnt ever an issue. And actually if those who 'know' me remember I was after a black GSD for 2nd pup... didnt get that one in the end, wasnt for me.

Anyway, good job as my 2 pale sable muppets are now Very Dark Sable hooligans darlings and no matter what colour you wear you end up with matching dog hair accessorising your outfit!

I have posted on that thread. Bloody hate puppy farms, cant abide eejits who buy from them and then try to justify their reasons. Angry

wildfig · 06/05/2011 19:59

have posted. I torment myself checking Many Tears for the poor rescued Basset breeding bitches from Wales, with their lovely gentle eyes; when I finally lose it win the lottery I'm going to buy a castle and take them all in.

minimu1 · 06/05/2011 20:05

Nope - not going to stop you Val - I am glad you went for it.

Dogs are so much easier to train than humans when will people learn about the horrors of puppy farms

Scuttlebutter · 06/05/2011 23:00

Minimu, people don't WANT to learn about the horrors of puppy farms - that's the sad truth. A few do and are plugging away at the issue, but I can remember campaigning on this when I was barely out of my teens and I'm now 46 as Wales unfortunately seems to be specialising in it. What drives it is enforcement that could be most charitably be described as patchy at best, and downright incompetent at worst, allied to the fact that pups make an ideal cash crop for any farmer. Most of West Wales (memorably described as "Sicily without the sun") is tight as a gnat's chuff, and this makes it hard for investigators. Buyers are driven by price and don't care/won't ask the difficult questions about health or welfare. Put these different factors together (the language is another issue that makes it harder for outside investigators) and you have the perfect storm.

chickchickchicken · 06/05/2011 23:13

scuttle - agree with you about west wales. a place i love and visit every year still but shocking and distressing to still see the cardboard signs advertising puppies for sale. why the hell do people still buy these puppies? it makes me so Angry

JaxTellersOldLady · 07/05/2011 17:39

To answer your question chick most people buy the puppies, I suppose because they feel sorry for the dogs and think they are 'helping' by removing a puppy from a horrid situation, when in fact they are supporting this awful practice.

I used to have a rescue shepherd that came from a puppy farm in Wales. (She lasted 12 weeks at her home from birth) and then got dumped at GSDrescue.

I took her on... poor thing, no socialisation, no puppy training, or toilet training and she was tiny for a GSD. I worked very very very hard with her and took her everywhere, socialising with people, children, dogs and training classes. Sadly the poor thing only lasted about 3 years and she was gone. We had to make a very hard decision to have her PTS and as far as I and our Vets are concerned it was because of her 'breeding' that made her so ill. Luckily or not so lucky I was helping out at rescue and got to see her paperwork. You guessed it; Wales puppy farm. Sad

At least she had a fantastic life after she came to live with us, albeit a short one.

Shocking post, good for you for telling it as it is, but I doubt anything will change in the poster's silly views.
