Okay, so it's not about a dog. But seeing as you are MNs resident rescue rehoming expert I thought you might be able to help me. I basically need a rabbit for my rabbit because she's lonely and doesn't feel safe on her own, and I'm looking to get one from a rescue, hopefully this little chap and I was wondering if the rehoming process was the same as rehoming a dog (homechecks etc)? I have a friend who works at this rescue and I have emailed her to ask her about it but she hasn't got back to me yet and I'm needing help ASAP. Also, do you think they would let me have a rabbit seeing as I'm due to give birth in less than 5 weeks time? I want to get it sorted quick as possible because of this.

Any help and advice would be very greatfully recieved :)

I've had a couple of rescue rabbits and neither time did the rescue require a home check. I popped over for a chat, they did ask me quite a few questions to check I knew how to look after a rabbit and saw me handling a few and then I picked one up. Can't see why being very pregnant would be a problem at all. Beware of introducing the new rabbit though, some rabbits just refuse to get on with others and can fight to the point of killing their supposed companions.

Do you know, I have no idea!

What I do know is that policy in independent rescue varies from organisation to organisation. The only thing you can do is ask, although I do know that the Mayflower homecheck for dogs and cats.

I'm afraid we can't have rabbits here in this house... the resident ferret, lthough a pet and not a worker (shudder) wouldn't like it!

I was speaking to someone else on the furry animals thread and she said she took her female rabbit to a rescue and let the people there bond her with one of their males, the owner picked 5 male rabbits and her female picked number 3 off the list :o I thought that was funny, reminded me of blind date!

I read their facebook page which appears to have more info on rehoming than their actual website Hmm and it says they homecheck any potential new owners. It tells you the rehoming fees for dogs, but not cats or rabbits. I emailed my friend on wednesday and she has literally just this minute got back to me. Hasn't a clue as it was the dogs she worked with. I can see this process taking a long time.

RE the pregnant thing, I just thought that if it were a dog I was after they probably wouldn't allow me to have one as dogs sometimes tend to get left out when babies come along don't they? Depending entirely on how much the family care for the dog of course.

I know someone with working ferrets, I've seen them once, they look evil! They're friendly enough but you can tell they're not pets.
