I'm just making myself very sad now.
Too big for my flat. I thought these sort of stories were exaggerated.

If I ever win the lottery, I'm opening a rescue centre.

And setting up a Batman type vigilante justice squad for retribution on these type of arsehole owners.

What the hell is "boystus"?

Seriously, why is it that 99.9% of these types of ad usually appear to have been written by semi-literate morons?

Is there a link between education/IQ and the tendency to obtain/give away animals at the drop of a hat?

Virgowoo · 05/05/2011 19:50

I'm assuming "boystus" is actually boisterous. Which means "I haven't bothered training my dog and he jumps all over you and steals food from your hand"

Poor dogs. They think they're part of a family and then...whoom.

Virgowoo · 05/05/2011 19:57

I'm a big fan of the AmBull, I have a large one who is currently eating his dinner at my feet.

It seems sad to me that looking at ads, they seem to depreciate in value like cars. @£300-500 as pups when they're cute - @£200 as an adolescent when they're getting big and annoying - Free to a good home when they're fully grown and untrained.

Poor dogs, absolutely unbelievable that anyone would sell them like unwanted possessions like that, with not the slightest care for what happens to them. As for the 'he got too big for my flat' one - wtf? You didn't find out how big the breed gets before buying a puppy? Angry.

It's a complicated issue. Animal welfare in this country depends very much on the care (or lack of) from the owner and relying on the human's sense of responsibility to the animal. As the ads demonstrate, it is all too commonplace for some people to swap/sell/give away animals without a second thought.

I have heard a suggestion that a licencing scheme should be brought back for dogs, modelled on vehicle registration with 'logbooks', to introduce more responsibility - but for that to work, you'd be talking about funding something the size of DVLA to register animals - can you see that happening?

The reason I was looking in the first place was because someone brought this to my attention:

I despair of backyard breeders. AmBulls are going the way of the Staffie unfortunately. Uninformed people breeding from semi mature dogs in this case is not the way to go with a large breed that has associated health issues like hip dysplasia and NCL and if not socialised and trained properly, could be potentially dangerous.

OldBag, good on you for complaining to Gumtree. I don't know how sites like this can take adverts for animals like they were furniture or something. It's just not ethical and while there are people willing to give away their dogs no questions asked, it provides an excellent avenue for dogfighters/similarly unethical people to pick up dogs with virtually no effort.

Does anyone have any experience of challenging gumtree/preloved etc on their advertising policy?
