Would you put off this spaying?

Hi there, my dog Poppy is due to be spayed on Tuesday. The last couple of days she's had diarrhea for some unknown reason. I've spoken to the vet today who has said keep an eye on her, plain food etc, and she does seem bright and happy in herself.

If it clears up over the weekend (if it doesn't I will be back to the vet), do you think she will be OK to have her spayed? I have agreed to take her in Tues morning early and discuss it then, but I'm very nervous. I'm aware of what happened to kid's puppy and I feel that if she has had an illness this week it ought to be put off.

Mind you, I'm terrified about having it done anyway, but I will go ahead! just wondered about putting it off a week. They were trying to get her mid- cycle.

Anyone with any experience/ impartial vets?

Personally, for me if there was any doubt, I'd delay it. You can always rebook it for another time but if the op went wrong, you can't turn back the clock.
Thank-you for remembering my darling pup x

my dog was poorly the day before op, i rung vet who said to take dog in for consultation before op. i did this and vet said ok to go ahead with op. i was in favour of postponing but as i trusted vet i took his advice. dog was absolutely fine. like you i was worried anyway and just glad it was over with

OK, thanks. Trouble is, I'm so nervous about having it done at all.... but she had one season and it wasn't easy so I think I need to.....probably it will be fine, but you're right that you can't turn back the clock.

Kid, I love hearing about Teddy but I always still think of Moby when you post. x

It's a hard decision to make and I hear so many stories about dogs being neutered/spayed and everything being fine. I couldn't take the risk with teddy, he won't be getting neutered.

On 27th May, it will be a whole year since that dreadful day moby died. I still haven't got over his death, I cry all the time even though I have teddy.
Teddy is such a lovely dog, very affectionate, chilled out and my shadow!

Well, we went to the vet today and it has been put off. Firstly because she has lost a bit of weight because of last week's tummy upset (fine now) and secondly because vet suspects she is coming into season again (which makes it much more risky, apparently). I was very adamant I wanted to avoid risk as much as was possible, so I now have to keep an eye on her and rebook at a later date.

I will see if her next season is as awful as the last (blood everywhere, Poppy humping/ waggling bottom at our neutered male dog incessantly, followed by phantom pregnancy and her turning very aggressive to our other dog). It's taken her 3 months to settle back down! However, the vet said it can be a bit like people; the first season or two can be a bit erratic. Lets hope I hardly notice the next one!

Am stupidly relieved at Poppy's reprieve, though. We've been on lots of long walks today and had lots of cuddles :)

I'm secretly glad it's been postponed. She needs to be in tip top shape to ensure a quick and speedy recovery.

Now I know what the smell is on teddy, I feel so sorry for him and have been giving him lots of cuddles tonight. I've bathed his face in salt water too. My poor little baby, but I know he is on the road to recovery already.

Hope poppy's next season passes without too much stress for you!
