The other thread reminded me of amusing incident last week that I just had to share. A call came from the owner of a young lab that had just eaten 50g of 99% cocoa solids chocolate - advise come straight to surgery and we will vomit the dog.
We admin the apo-go 5 mins later the retching starts and then up it all comes the chocolate is still as a whole bar only slightly melted.
Yes a labrador can inhale a 50g chocolate bar without it touching the sides.
I expect to see this dog a lot over the years.

Lol, I think it's definitely a labrador thing. Goldens obviously have more sense... Grin

We took our cross breed to the vet for an emergency visit on Saturday and a blockage was one possible cause of the problem. As the et examined himhe asked if he was allowed/ever ate sticks, stnes etc, to which I replied no. She said 'that's good. I had a labrdor in last weekend and when I asked the owners if the dog ever ate stones they replied 'oh yes, all the time, but it's fine, they always come out the other end'. Apparently that stone cost them over £500, they just hadn't realised it could be a problem.

I am constantly amazed by the number of people who actually think it is okay to let their dog eat stones. Plus if you see the damage chewing stones does to teeth.

I have to say Goldens seem to prefer slug pellets to chocolate in my neck of the woods.

One of my labs used to pinch raw sprouts when we were preparing them at the kitchen sink - and yes they went through him - and yes they used to cause the same offensive odour after eating that seems to afflict humans!

PowderMum · 03/05/2011 22:33

I don't think that there is anything a Lab won't eat.

MotherJack · 03/05/2011 22:48

Were it not for you stating a Lab, I would be sure you were talking about my dog, who ate 3/4 of a Terry's chocolate orange thingymujig in the dark choc mint version... and they weigh 175g. Needless to say, one apo-go jab later followed by a washing up bowl full of breakfast and several "segments" she was well again (after about 6-8 hours). I very much doubt the induced nausea will put her off in future, too.

I love my little eejit Smile

hatwoman · 03/05/2011 22:55

oh pmsl. did you rinse it off and give it back to the owner?

musicposy · 03/05/2011 23:28

LOL hatwoman! "Oh look, it's virtually intact, you can eat it after all".

My elder dog in particular swallows everything whole - he just kind of chucks it down his throat with a repeated thrusting motion until it disappears. He's never realised he possesses teeth!

Haha, doghouse is making me go eeewww a lot tonight!! Grin
