Diarrhoea in 12 week old pup

Rollo (golden retriever puppy aged 12 weeks) has had two lots of diarrhoea in the last 2 days, with the latest being the worst. Inbetween times, he's had normal poos.

I ran out of the breeder's food - Royal Canin Golden Retriever 29 Junior Professional - and managed at the v v last moment to get hold of what I thought was the same food - except I've now noticed on the massive bag that it doesn't say Professional - although it's still Golden Retriever 29 Junior.

Does anyone know if these 2 products are v diffreent and this might explain his 'runs' which has only begun since the new bag of food was started?

Should I be rushing to the vets (not open today I don't think) or see how it goes?

Should I keep feeding him normally or reduce his food amount or give him something else?

Could it be that he's simply coming across new viruses as he goes out and about now?

Could he have eaten something nasty in our garden (he tends to nibble moss, grass and mud and leaves, if I don't manage to extract them from his mouth in time)?

Could it be connected to the fact that one of our cats has diarrhoea and soem sickness (though the vet thinks this is because of hyeprsensitive stomach - not a virus)? But the pup and cats don't yet mix much....

Of course he's getting plenty of water to drink - and he's behaving normally otherwise - ie gorgeous, massively growing bundle of creamy/ sandy fur who adores meeting new people in the park and occasionally, when he's in the right mood, does exactly what I tell him to do! - otherwise happily ignores me, then rushes towards me and thrusts his entire warm furry body into my lap, despite now being too big, and turns over for a tummy tickle, with a doggy smile on his face!

For what is marketed as a 'premium' food, at a premium price, that's actually pretty poor quality stuff - rice, maize, vegetable protein and wheat in the first line of ingredients. Food intolerances can manifest at any time, even if a dog has been fine on that feed previously. I won't start gabbing on about how none of those things has a place in a dog's diet anyway. Grin

Ditch the grains!

In the meantime I would give him boiled rice and if you have it chicken today and tomorrow and see how he is in the morning.

Don't know about the food but it could easily upset him. If he seems ill of course do contact the vet asap as puppies can go down hill quickly but if he is still running about drinking and eating do not worry puppies do pick thing up and we never know the reason

Thanks everyone. He's had another normal poo now so I'm not sure if it's the food or what, as I hadn't read your messages before his last feed.

However, it sounds as if I need to consider a gradual change of food. Many thanks for the recommendation, shineon... Has anyone else got any recommendations too (Midori/ Minimu?) I'm happy to buy the best for him, whatever the cost.

Another vote for Fish4Dogs.

walkersmum · 25/04/2011 09:00

My vote is Orijen or Acana.
Again, a fan of no cereals or rice.

Do your research but most of all change over gradually and give any change a chance, don't swap do quickly.

I use orijen it got the pet food of the year the last 3 years

i used the links above to decide

minimu1 · 25/04/2011 09:06

I feed BARF so can't recommend a commercial food.

Personally I would not pay large sums of money for food that contains beet fibre as fish4 dogs does

Another vote for Orijen here. My dogs had dreadful poos on fish 4 dogs so I swapped my elderly collie over to Orijen Senior some time ago. His coat is glossy and his stinky breath has disappeared! Grin I am in the process of switching collie pup (5mos) over to Orijen puppy. She has always been fed Royal Canin as that was what her breeder recommended. Her poos, however, were loose and green so I'm steering clear of wheat and grains. She is loving Orijen. I like the fact that it contains meat and fish products fit for human consumption, so not the detritus of the meat production industry.
