puppy cries constantly when in separate room

We've had our puppy 6 days now and she is happy sleeping in a crate in our bedroom. During the day she never chooses to go in her crate downstairs and if we try to leave her in the kicthen, even if we are only in the living room, she whines and barks constantly. We've got a plug in DAP diffuser and I know it's only been 6 days but we HAVE to be able to pop out now and then but if she going to bark constantly then how can we ever leave her?

I know we're supposed to get her used to being apart from us in small stages but she literally can't cope with being left for 30 seconds and we have neighbours! Advice is to ignore the noise but what if it NEVER stops, is there a cut off at which you should go back in and calm her down as she gets in a right state. At the moment we're tyring to get her used to simply being in the kitchen with a baby gate keeping her in. We don't put her in the crate as she's even more distressed if we do that.

Well, I'm pleased to report that a week later all the troubles seem to be over. Despite the advice from all the armchair experts we decided to show some compassion to our little puppy and my DH spent a few night sleeping next to her crate in the kitchen. She never chooses to go in to her crate during the day so we decided to try leaving her with the run of downstairs again and she was quiet all night. She has also been quiet during the day when we'be been out. We have an IP camera so can both see and hear her when we're not at home.

Weirdly enough the problem seemed to be the stair gate on the kitchen doorway. If we leave that open she is fine so we've put one on the stairs instead. She has access to the garden through the catflap and hasn't had an accident in the house for days (unless it's on the carpet which we haven't found!)

so glad you went with your heart. dogs arent robots and sometimes you have to just go with what you feel is right

what is an IP camera? would love to know if my bossy older dog secretly likes the youngsters and cuddles up with them when i am out

" Despite the advice from all the armchair experts" you were happy enough to ask in the first place what do you expect from a forum Confused

I am glad that you are now able to work things out for yourself

An IP camera is like a webcam but you don't have to connect it to a computer all the time i.e. the computer doesn't have to be on. I have a Y-Cam 'Knight'. Cost about £175 new from Amazon but I got it after we were burgled last year so I can keep an eye on the house when not there so it gives me immense piece of mind and of course it now serves to let me keep an eye on the dog.

You can program it to alert you when it detects movement (via email) and to take a photo or to start recording and send images to email/FTP. I only worked out how to get audio on it last week but it's pretty cool. It works using your wifi although you can have it hard wired to a modem too. The model I have has infra red lights to see in the dark and you can access it via the web or on your phone. Y-cam have their own app which is ok but many others also do apps for iPhone and Android. other IP cameras are available of course!

If I felt inclined I could give you a password and the web address for my camera and you could have a live feed of my hallway!

Glad all worked out for you. Am equally glad I stuck with the advice I was given by minimu and midori, as apart from the first night, my pup hasn't had problems with crate at all. In fact she's just disappeared off in there now for a kip :)

She does howl a bit over the stair gate between the kitchen and play room if we're in the playroom though, but again I ignore it, as until she can be trusted not to jump up and gnaw on my DC's I have to give them and me some peace of mind and security.
