Are black and white springers usually so much larger than liver and white ones?

That's it really. We have a black and white springer and he seems huge in comparison to the liver and white ones we see about. I don't see many other black and white ones to compare with.

no not usually - there can be huge differences in the sizes of both colours :)

Choufleur · 22/04/2011 19:59

I'm wondering if he has some sort of setter in him now. He seems massive. and has a setterish shape muzzle.

google welsh spaniels they may be bigger

WhatTheActualFuck · 22/04/2011 20:26

The black and white you are seeing may be from show lines. The majority of springers you see around (well, if my area is anything to go by) are working bred and liver & white. Working lines tend to be smaller and more slight of build, usually with shorter ears too. You do get working bred springers in black and white too; but there would be little difference in size.

Show type - couldn't find a clear pic of a b&w show type

Working type

Or you could have seen an English Setter, or maybe even a Large Munsterlander. Or a crossbreed.

WhatTheActualFuck · 22/04/2011 20:28

Welsh springers are red and white - there is only one colour.

sharbie · 22/04/2011 20:29

rightttttt

WhatTheActualFuck · 22/04/2011 20:32

Pardon??

According to the breed standard they are acceptable in red and white only. Is that incorrect?

sharbie · 22/04/2011 20:40

Smile i'm sure you are right.i was just commenting on my useless knowledge of welsh spaniels.

Choufleur · 22/04/2011 20:53

He looks more like a working breed but he is much bigger than most springers I see. My mum has a liver and white springer and he is a good 4" smaller at the shoulder.

We got him from a rescue centre so he may well not be a pedigree (I don't really care) just wondering why is his so big.

I thought welsh springer were generally smaller.

gah i am hopeless i'm sure i'd seen a welsh one once that was black and white and bigger than a normal springer.must have been a cross.

WoodRose · 22/04/2011 23:01

We got our liver & white springer from a rescue as a failed gun dog. He was very tall for a springer - much taller than the show type springers I see being walked in our area. I did wonder though whether he had some setter/ pointer in him. Sadly, he died suddenly last October. He was only 2years old and although we had only had him for 2 months I miss him dreadfully. Sad

kid · 23/04/2011 20:04

I've got a show type springer and I think he is huge.
At 10 months old, he weighs 20.8kg, I haven't measured his height though.

I walked in him the forest recently which is very popular with other dog walkers. I was stopped so many times by people asking what type of dog he was. He is a tri-colour which is rarer than the black & white / liver & white.

Do you have a photo of your dog that you can post?

gregssausageroll · 24/04/2011 12:14

Welsh Spinger Spaniel is red and white and is smaller than an ESS.

Choufleur · 24/04/2011 13:20

Jake is about 24kg. And we reckon about a year and a bit old.

Photos on my profile now.

I have a black and white springer (working stock) and she is very petite Smile
Weighs in around 12.5-14 kg depending on the time of year.

kid · 25/04/2011 19:57

He is lovely. It's hard to tell how big he is in the photos. I can see he has quite a square looking nose, so does my springer.
