My DD has not needed her inhalers for her asthma for ages now - in fact for the similar amount of time that we have had our little dog (16 months). I feel that this can't be just a coincidence. Could exposure to dog's licking etc. have built up her immune system? I know I shouldn't tempt fate, but she really has been so much healthier since we got a dog. Is there any research on this? Think I read somewhere about children who live on farms being much healthier than the average child. What does everyone think?

Interesting point, my dd suffered terribly with bronchiolitis which disappeared when we moved semi-rural and got a dog. I hadnt linked the two before.

She hasnt used her inhaler since we got him when I was actually worried that the dirt/hair might make it more recurrent.

I'd agree about kids on farms - my oldest friend lives on a farm, three kids, all incredibly healthy despite living with a menagerie of dogs, cats, poultry, horses, cows and various other beasts along the way.

DH has asthma which is still triggered by longer haired dogs, cats and horses even though we have three dogs at home - we have greyhounds who although are short coated are definitely not non-shedding! I/we make a point of housekeeping with his allergies in mind - so no carpet downstairs, regular damp dusting, frequent hot washing of dog duvets, quilts, sofa covers etc, plenty of airing and so on. Paradoxically, although there may be more oomska coming in to the house, it is probably cleaner because we have a more aggressive management programme for it. When we didn't have dogs, and had carpets, I'd only hoover once a week sometimes, now it gets done at least every other day, and sometimes more often depending on visitors/amount of crap.

We find that when we visit friends with horses/cats etc, that he does start wheezing/eyes sore/sneezing etc - I suppose the question is what would have happened if he'd been exposed to animals as a boy? Fortunately, I was exposed to a wide variety including horses, dogs, cows, poultry, guinea pigs, rabbits and cats and have never had any problems. It's a really interesting issue, especially as lots of kids today seem to spend a huge amount of time indoors, which I don't think is healthy. Maybe kids with dogs are also getting outside more? For walks and play?

There was a fab study about three years ago that showed it is not the dog it self which helps with the asthma, but the dog owning lifestyle.

There is a mycobacterium in mud that helps improve asthma they found and if you own a dog you tend to still go for walks when there is lots of lovely mud to spalsh through.
In the study they got children with asthma who didn't own a dog to go for walks of the same frequency and type as the dog owners did and saw their asthma improve. This has added weight to the clean theroy that alot of current allergies are related to our environment being too clean as some bacteria actually do us good. This also goes along with the theory that your immune system needs something to act on and if there is some dirt to work againist it will work againist itself. This has been taken a further step in that some individuals with severe autoimmune disease are now given pig roundworms to give their body something to work againist and their autoimmune disease has improved. This is an area of immunology in it's infancy, but is proving very interesting for the future.
The old saying God made dirt so it won't hurt does have some truth in it after all.

Very interesting Lizcat - I thought it couldn't just be coincidence! I had never heard of the mycobacterium in mud before but my DB has always said that kids immune systems need something to work on when they are young otherwise they don't develop as they should. Feel justified in not doing any housework today - thank you everyone!
