Did you know it isn't a requirement to walk your dog?

There's a huge rotty at the end of our street, never gets walked and just gets out into the back yard for his business Sad Which the owner sweeps into the alleyway! The back yard's tiny so no way can it exercise. A neighbour's reported the man to the enviromental health about the mess, I rang RSPCA about it being cooped up. But they've done nothing wrong? Such a shame but nothing I can do. I know it's not getting walked as no-one's ever seen it out, except in the yard. I've only lived here 7 months.

Not many people see me walking my dogs of an evening as it's usually past 9pm by the time I go out.

But aside from that, you are right. You are not legally required to exercise your dog, which is disgusting imo. So long as it's 'basic' needs (food, water, vet care) are met then your not acting cruelly. Imo, exercise is a basic need.

It's so mean. A big dog like that cooped up all day. I don't understand rubbish dog owners. Why have one if you can't look after it properly.

PersonalClown · 19/04/2011 14:53

Unfortunately yes.

When I lived in a block of flats, the girl underneath me got a Staffy puppy, then left home for weeks on end, coming in occasionally to feed it and fill up the water bowls.

When I called the RSPCA, a lovely lady came out, said it was an absolute disgrace as we could see through the letter box that the pup was living in it's own filth, but as it was being fed and watered, she wasn't allowed to do anything as it wasn't technically being neglected!!Shock

They couldn't take the puppy off her when she left it shut in again and the flat conveniently went up in flames.

Oh that's really sad. RSPCA aren't the best people btw, hopefully Val or someone will see this and advise you better.

We have a 100ft garden but still didn't get a dog as there isn't a good way to walk it round here and apparently they need a change of scene once a day at least. (if I'm wrong please let me know and we might rescue one!)

i remember that pc. and the kitten. Sad

Curiousmama · 19/04/2011 15:16

Sad poor staffy.

No this dog isn't walked. Mine is exercised at all different hours and I have never seen it out. Plus you can tell looking at it iykwim? I feel so sorry for it. I even thought about offering to walk the beast Grin think it'd walk me though and I'd probably get a mouthful from the owner?

Poor dog. You could offer to walk him - but I did wonder if the reason he isn't walked is because he's difficult on the lead? This seems to be a recurring pattern with big dogs like Rotties - people buy a puppy, never bother to train them to walk nicely, then when they get big they can't cope with all the pulling and get dragged about, resulting in either the dog being dumped in rescue or just shut up in the house/garden all the time.

Somehow I just knew this link would be about the RSPCA Sad It is a disgrace that they leave situations like this alone.

Poor poor dog

Curiousmama · 20/04/2011 14:41

Yes it is a disgrace. The fact he's always in a yard full of dog mess didn't seem a concern either? Sad If I get chatting to the owner I'll probably say something like 'how is he on the lead? must be hard to walk such a big dog is it? Wink

Our neighbours have 3 terriers. I have never seen them take them for a walk in the 6 yrs we have been here. They go in the garden and stay inside being pampered.

Curiousmama · 20/04/2011 14:48

I've just reported the mess to enviromental health.
