I know chocolate isn't good but do I need to worry? Large greyhound, not the 1st time he has stolen chocolate!

I was looking forward to eating that later! Angry

Not as bad a your DP eating your choc, at least the dog doesn't know any better!

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 14/04/2011 20:07

I don't think a Snickers bar has got very much chocolate in it. If you are worried, phone the vet for reassurance. Bloody dog!

longislandicetea · 14/04/2011 20:10

God, the dogs fine it's YOU who has lucked out!

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 14/04/2011 20:10

My last sheltie ate all the chocolate tree decs off the Christmas tree once, 12 dairy milk choc ones, had the runs for a of days but was fine.

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 14/04/2011 20:30

He ate chocolate coins at Christmas including some foil wrappings which ended up vomited up on the carpet that night!

It sounds like he hasn't eaten enough chocolate for it to be a problem. They need to eat a fair bit to get a lethal dose of theobromine but once you know they have eaten some, keep your eyes open for a while as I looked into recently and dogs digestive systems means it can take a few days for some problems to show. Should be ok with a snickers though, as it's just coated.

Hope he enjoyed it Grin

Our greyhound ate a bag of chocolate coins and suffered no ill effects! Other than a telling-off, as he got into our bedroom and was curled up on our bed in a mess of foil wrappings... how do paws do that?? I find it hard enough with fingernails!!

My 11 year old GSD broke into the lounge & ate an entire (small) box of quality street the other week.

Apart from colourful poo, and a small amount of rainbow sick (all the shiney wrappers) he had no ill effects.

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 15/04/2011 20:41

Well, he seems fine today! Love him to bits but his food stealing drives me mad!

Ah.. I know the answer to this one, Tortoise, from my lurcher experience - there isn't one other than to make sure all food that isn't his is out of his reach. Hard with a greyhound, but it was your fault he ate it Wink Lesson learned Grin

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 15/04/2011 21:50

Lol! Yes, very hard. It was my fault, i forgot it was in my bag and i went outside to tidy the garden a bit!
He will even steal straight out of DC's hand if they dare to take their eyes off their food. He is very sly! Grin

According to here chocolate is the third most common cause of poisoning - approx 8,600 cases a year. Dark chocolate is the most toxic as it contains the most theobromine. Greyhounds (as I know Blush) are very accomplished thieves. Please, please make sure your DC and you are very disciplined about food that may be toxic to your dog - others could be raisins and grapes, as well as chocolate products. The link I've put up gives a comprehensive list of most common poisons in the UK, and is a very valuable resource if you think there is any possibility of your dog eating something they shouldn't.

MotherJack · 15/04/2011 23:34

indeed Scuttle. Dogs love it but it is a poison. As I understand it, the majority of "dog chocolate" sold at pet stores does not have the poison removed, but is merely poor quality chocolate with theobromine still in it. Dogs seem to also love grapes which are on the poison list for them, but tend to leave onions and garlic alone, but some will still eat it in, say, a bolognese type thing.

Years ago I bought a kong and the sales assistant tried to sell me dog-friendly peanut butter to go in it "as the normal stuff is poisonous to dogs" Righto love. I'll take a bag of choccy drops though being as you're happy to sell me those? Clueless.
