Hi all we've just got back from our vets with our mad collie. He managed to cut his leg just above the ankle whilst out today. The vet said he didnt want to give him a GA to suture it so hes stappled it. Hes put him in a lampshade for 14 days untill he takes the staples out to stop him licking them.

The funniest part is he has to have restrictied exercise and is not allowed to run free for the 14 days untill its healed. So far since having it on hes got himself stuck in the car by wedgeing it behind the rear view mirror. hes cleared the coffee table and taken 3 attempts to get in the front door with it. Any advice on how to cope for the next 14days with it. TIA

He will get used to it after a few days. Our lab had one on for around 10 days after castration a few months ago. We had to get the first one replaced after 24 hours as he crashed into the shed and split it! Hmm He also managed to shut himself in various rooms as he tried to get through doors that were just not quite open enough.....

We've had the door problem purple aswell and the turning round and clearing the tales and hes only had it on for 2 hours lol. He hasnt attempted our very narrow stairs yet im glad to say.

My old collie used to walk backwards through doors with his lampshade on. I have a video somewhere I will try and find it. - Clever dogs these collies Grin

Not alot to say, other than Good Luck!

We had to repaint all the doorframes after our dog had one on for four weeks!

For the fourth week we ended up with a 2ft hard collar together with a large blow-up collar behind because he worked out that he could wedge the end of the collar against the door frame and push it down his neck so he could reach the bad paw. Cue yet another visit to the vet to get a new dressing.

At that point we had to separate him from the DC's because he couldn't see them and kept spinning round and knocking the 3yr old over.

You can use these comfy collars here. They are unsurprisingly more comfy for the dogs BUT it does depend where the injury is as some dogs can reach some parts of their body with them on.

Can't offer any advice but this might make you laugh - I had to take my friend's DD to the vet with me to visit my cat, and I explained to her that he wasn't feeling very happy because he had to wear a lampshade.

She came back to my house, pointed at the large, spherical lampshade and asked if the cat was going to wear it when it came home..

My advice is don't wear tights! boy, do those lampshades scrape when they catch your legs..

I've just had 4 days of a lab in a lampshade. I got so fed up of it that, whenever she was with me (most of the time, actually) I took it off her and checked her verbally to stop her from licking her wounds (allergy-type skin problem which she made worse by licking) and only put the lampshade on at night or if I had to leave her. Depends on the dog, of course - but it worked here.

Hes starting to get used to it now at last tonight will be intersting as he sleeps on the bed at some point normally. Will be worse in the morning as when dp goes to work he gets up on the bed and lays up the pillow end i can see us ending up black and blue by the end.

I came in early to find my ds had put one of his cuddly toys in the lampshade with him as the dog looked sad Grin

I hate those lampshades. Our eldest collie couldn't get the knack of laying down with his on after castration so he didn't sleep. That and bouncing off walls and generally looking like the world had ended!

Like AprilRose we ended up taking it off and just supervising the licking.

Weird thing is, now whenever he goes to overly lick a scratch or something, all we have to say is "do you want the lampshade?" and he will instantly stop!
