Is it time to let my dog go?

My boy Cracker is 15 and has arthritis (he gets metacam which helped at first but I dont think it's helping anymore).

He did have a problem with pooing in the house a few months ago, but we've more or less sorted that put by changing feeding times and smaller amounts, still have the ocasional accidents.

Anyway he's not eaten anything since about 3pm on Saturday and I dont think he's been drinking much either (if at all), his urine is very dark and not as much as usual.

He's also "just not right" in himself, cant really explain it but the "sparkle" has gone from his eyes. He struggles to get up, lie down and walk, sometimes his back legs give way other times it's like he's tripping up.

I take him out 3 times a day as he finds it very hard getting up the stairs (we live in a 2nd floor flat and he used to go out 5/6 times a day)

I really really dont want him to suffer Sad but at the same time I dont want to let him go. I feel guilty and selfish and dont know what to do

I've phoned the vet and I've to take him in at 4.50 today, so should I be preparing myself for coming home alone?

I'm so sad to have to say my beautiful Cracker didnt come home from the vet today Sad

He's hardly eaten all week, but each day I kept hoping that maybe tomorrow he'd eat more.

When I took him in the vet examined him and then asked me what I thought, as soon as she said that, I knew it was time, it was a hard decision but at the same time I knew I was doing the right thing for him.

My daughter came with me and we cuddled him (and cried all over him) till the end, it was very peaceful.

Thanks again for all your good wishes, it has really helped over the past few days x

I'm so sorry, MrsPresley. You and your daughter were big people and bravely put Cracker ahead of your own needs and wants. Please, take comfort that you did the right thing and in the memories you have of all those years of happiness with him.

Run free, little Cracker.

Val x

WoodRose · 15/04/2011 21:36

I'm so sorry for your loss. Like Valhalla says, you showed how much you loved him by letting him go.

MotherJack · 15/04/2011 21:39

Oh Sad Been sneakily following this, and can't put together any words better than Val's.

Perhaps you can buy something as a mark of his years in his wonderful home with you and yours, Mrs Presley. Take care of yourselves during your grieving xx

Madondogs · 17/04/2011 12:31

So sorry for your loss. Been thinking about my two dogs tonight and am feeling them both very close to me, despite losing the last one nearly three years ago. I miss them so much, even After so long. Very precious memories.

MrsPresley, very sorry to hear about about Cracker, but you were very brave and did the right thing. I let my old dog go on a bit too long and I regret that now. Treasure your happy memories of him.

ditavonteesed · 20/04/2011 08:16
