Is this worthy of reporting to RSPCA or similar?

About a mile out of town on one of the routes I run regularly there is a barn in an enclosed area which is in the process of being renovated (I think). There are piles of building materials, a few old cars and some straw bales. In one of the buildings near the front there is a dog, a white alsation, chained up. Chain long enough that he can move about the yard and bark at passers by. I have been past several times at different times of the days and said hound is always there on his own.

He barks like crazy but he also wags his tail and cocks his ears. He honestly doesn't look aggressive. I am wondering if it's just a pet dog that has been chained up to act as a deterrent but it can't be right for him to be left alone all the time.

Should I report this?

Can you see if it has access to clean fresh water and a dry bed?

Ormirian · 03/04/2011 17:50

His 'shed' is roofed but I can't see inside. He doesn't look starved or ill but I can't imagine it's good for him to be left alone all the time.

Personally I would report it, if it is on a public road you may find other people have reported it already too. If the RSPCA investigate and all is fine then nothing is lost, if they find the animal is in trouble then hopefully they can help.

Yes thanks pure. I will. He doesn't look like he wants to tear me limb from limb, he looks like he wants to play Sad

Yes, please report it. It'll be a bloody miracle if the RSPCA come out and they certainly won't do anything if the dog has clean water and shelter, but IMHO it's still important that you try.

Poor little sod, makes my heart ache to think of him tied up like that. :(
(See my photos and you'll know why white GSDs are especially close to my heart).

Poor thing. It's worth reporting just in case. It might make the owner think even if the rspca don't do anything.

I saw a white Belgian sheepdog the other week. It was just about the loveliest dog I have seen for years.

Ormirian · 03/04/2011 18:55

Well I rang. As long as he has shelter and can move and had food and water they won't come out. I said I couldn't see if he had food and water so she said to keep an eye on him and if he started to look sick I was to call again.

Maybe legally she is right and I know their resources are finite but I feel so bad for him. They need company, they're pack animals.

Anyone else worth ringing val?

Resourcing is not an issue for the RSPCA - they have a ridiculous amount of money stockpiled.

Vallhala · 03/04/2011 20:05

Scurry's right, resources are not an issue. The RSPCA had 119 MILLION in the bank at their last official audit.

TBH what I would recommend is this:

!. Ring again saying that the dog absolutely has no food and no water whatsoever and was tied so tightly that he couldn't reach his shelter. Let's see if they check on him now.

  1. Email RSPCA at [email protected], using a disposable email address if you prefer, giving them the same info and cc-ing to [email protected] and your local newspaper (and BLIND cc it to Jayne, the boss at GSD Rescue UK - [email protected]

The RSPCA hate Jayne as she takes them to task over cases where they won't act and they legally should and/or where they have committed attrocious actions such as shooting dogs. Blind CC her at first just to give her a heads up and in order not to antagonise and if you get no joy repeat the email, next time clearly cc-ing Jayne into it.

  1. Furnish 3 or 4 trusted friends with all the info, including full address and postcode and ask them to call the RSPCA too. Make sure they have ALL info on dog and address. The more complaints the more likely the RSPCA are to act.

Thankyou val
