Advice on hosting a dog for the holidays

I have a bouncy 5 month old lab colie cross puppy. We are putting lots of effort into training her and geting through the jumping up and chewing stages. DS 12 has now asked if we can host his school dog for 2.5 weeks She is a lovely 5 year old lab, very calm and good natured. My question to those of you with more dog experience ( ie everybody) is whether this will help my puppy settle down to be with an older dog or whether it will lead to more chaos? Also how would the older dog go spending a couple of weeks in a suburban house and garden ( with lots of walks) when she is used to large rural setting?
I thought I had opened this thread last night but now can't find it - my apologies if indeed it is also somewhere else.

He has a school dog, that's one up on a gerbilGrin.

Very hard questions to answer without knowing the dogs, but I would imagine if the older dog is as calm and good natured as you say she will be just fine with you, (I would keep her on a lead though).

Hmm the other bit is trickier, she won't teach your puppy any bad habits is she is calm and sensible, but prepare yourself for your puppy thinking it is 24/7 party timeGrin.

I am having a 4 year old dog to board next month along side my 10 month old puppy, one of their stipulations is he must sleep in the room with us, I am going to get no sleep for the duration (3 weeks) .

Thanks for such prompt responses. My son goes to an unusual school here in Australia! Set on 1100 acres of bush and with small classes. Kangaroos in the car park and a koala in a tree near the maths building. Sorry to digress but we think we are very lucky and it is worh a long commute.
Anyway, Holly the dog is very sweet and puts up with little kids pulling her ears, waking her up etc. Apparently her only transgression at school in two years is to take a sandwich once from someone's hand.
My question is exactly about whether she will regress and join in to a 24 hour party or whether Daisy the puppy will suddenly sober up.

I would doubt Daisy will suddenly sober up, but she will eventually collapseGrin

The first couple of days will probably be hard work, but I bet your son will love it.

My vote is a big yes, as she sounds gorgeous.

Your sons school sounds amazing btwEnvy.

Just looked at that website and Envy again!! It looks great!

JaxTellersOldLady · 02/04/2011 20:35

I also looked at the website, but "far far back as 2006." is that a typo on the website, because that was only a few years ago!

Apart from that, it looks fantastic.

Echoing what WTWTW said, your puppy wont sober up - but after a while it will get tired (for a little while)

Maybe when your pup is older it would work better.

saffronwblue · 03/04/2011 00:35

It is a sort of sarcastic joke. It has only been going since 2006. I feel mean not taking the dog but my life is a bit fraught at the moment and I know I have a terrible habit of bringing a new animal into the house to distract from other things. I've said we might take her later in the year.

ah I see... re the joke.

take it easy saffron, and sort out whats needing sorted, then you can take on the school dog for holidays. Grin

Anything you want to talk about on here? Most of the time, smartypants MNers are very helpful and full of good advice - or tell you to suck it up and stop whining! Wink
