Hi all,

Bit of advice required really. Not sure if this is the best place to post but it is about dogs, so I am guessing this is as good a place as any.

Husband and I are currently posted to Cyprus as he is in the Army (shit hole of a place in the treatment of animals - but I digress). Our next posting should be UK, and then the one after that he is going to request to be UK because it is our last. However we are looking to emigrate to Canada after he has done his 22.

We currently do not have dogs (due to our postings and wanting to wait until we could give a couple of dogs a responsible home). We both have had dogs in the past. Him until 3 years ago had a rescue staffy which we adored, and me nearly 10 years ago now had a colly x (crossed with what I don't know just know the damn thing was mad).

Now when we get back to UK I can work from home until my husband finishes work so one of us would be home all day. Initially I was going to get a couple of rescue staffs knowing how many there are couped up in rescue ctrs, but now I am concerned about the conflicting advice I have had in relation to importing them into Canada. Can anyone point me to a definitive answer to this because there is no way I would rehome an animal once it has become a member of our family. If we cannot rehome due to this then I would be looking at getting a couple of Boxers, maybe a year apart but I would prefer to rehome if I can.

The other question I have is this. I have a 10 year old - fine with dogs as his biological father has dogs and so does everyone else here actually, but I also have a 1 year old and she loves dogs. You may say that is great. It is. However I am concerned because she will go up to any dog and pet it, and I am very concious of people trying to train their dog on the lead, or her just being that little too rough (which she has not displayed yet, but she will soon need to be taught how strong she is). My next door neighbour has puppies and has said that I can use them to socialise my daughter with but I would welcome any suggestions on how best to do this as I would really like for her to grow up respecting animals.

Anyway, bored you enough with my questions.

Hi,

I'm in the UK and am involved in rescue here. I know that Canada has had some nasty breed-specific cases over recent years but am not sure if the legislation is country-wide or whether it varies from state to state, nor am I sure whether SBTs fall under the legislation. The people will know though - Dog Legislation Council of Canada.

WRT your one year old, with the right attitude it can be done - my daughters (now teenagers) were brought home from the maternity hospital to a resident dog. :) I'm not the best person to advise on that though, I'll leave it to others... I do dog welfare and behaviour, not humans, I've yet to understand my own species!

Correction - "These people will know", not "the people"!
