Stupid dog just ate a bumblebee :(

Our JRTx 11 month old puppy, who is into everything, was bounding about in the garden earlier. After a minute I had a suspicion she was jumping around over a bee, so I called her in and thought no more of it.

10 minutes or so later she was scratching wildly, non stop. I said "Poppy, what is the matter with you?" and as she turned to face me I noticed around her eyes was bright red and her face was all swollen up.

We rushed her to the vets who gave her antihistamine and steroid injections. She is now laid beside me asleep, very sorry for herself, face still all swollen. I am keeping an eye on her breathing. :( Keep your fingers crossed for us...

Thing is, I know that given the chance she will do it again. Any advice on what we could do in the future? Is human antihistamine syrup OK for dogs (if we calculate weight) so we coud act quicker next time? Anyone else had trouble with bees? At least Poppy's "leave it" command is pretty good, but by the time I noticed it was obviously too late. :(

Our black lab age11 still thinks it's worth getting up & nosing a bumble bee. Stupid is the word I'm afraid.

Or Golden Retriever (also called Poppy) is 3 this year and seems to have finally stopped eating bees, after having a permanently swollen face all summer (we have a bee hive at the bottom of the garden), there's not much you can really do, but the vet said its the same as people, it'll be a bit sore for a few hours and might go a bit puffy, but unless they are allergic its not really a problem. Presumably she will learn, eventually...

Jude, that's very reassuring. It's easy to panic the first time these things happen. Hopefully she will eventually learn that eating bees = feeling very groggy.

Her face is still like a balloon but she already seems a little brighter. :)

my nearly 4yr old jrt still chases insects. if bees/spiders are large then he chews and spits out. if small he swallows

chickchickchicken · 28/03/2011 19:46

oops meant to say glad she is feeling a bit brighter

My nanna's Yorkie used to watch ants so closely that they crawled all over her muzzle and stung her! Hmm
