Hi sorry for multiple posting today.

Just had dog out on a rural(y) walk, let him off leash, all good. We go through some gates to continue walk on path adjecent to farmers field, getting dusky now.

We walk up and i go to put him back on leash as getting near road, and bloody thing runs off.

Stay positive, call him back, he comes close aI take hold of his coller....he slips it Angry

call him back again, he comes over, go to put coller back on, he runs off....Keep doing this.....for obver half an hour!

By now its pitch black, no street lamps as in field (!) dog thinks this is great fun, I dont. Start panicing now, its dark near road, so walk away, he follows but wont get close and if i go after him he bolts. I cant go either way as roads all round, busy ons, its dark, dogs black.

By now I'm almost crying, in ballet shoes that keep falling off, feet covered in mud, still no dog.

Tractor comes from next fileld, call dog franticly, f*cking thing darts in front of tractor!

20 minutes later I finally get dog on leash, and get out of field. H trotts home like he's the happiest dog in the world, comes home and runs around mad barking, jumping and generally being a pain in the arse.

I can't even look at him. I will never let him off again, never been so bloody scared!

When you call him back to you scatter treats on the floor by your feet as he is eating the treats you have time to hold his collar and put on his lead

soakingfromtheschoolrun · 24/03/2011 20:54

I had used all the treats in y pocket on an earlier walk and not realised ....Blush

He'd slipped his caller too, otherwise i wuld have been able to grab him as he zoomed by

I guess you just need to be more prepared to prevent this happening again. Loads of treats and a tighter collar sound essential

I know how you feel.

When I let mine off once-was practising "stay" & "come" iyswim, just as he got to me he veered past me.

Of course it ended up with me chasingBlush, & by the time I got to the end of the track he had crossed a busy road.

Then I lost sight of him, flagged down a van & jumped in with a total stranger who gave me a lift further up the road.

No sign, decided to go home & call a friend for help.

As I was approaching our road I saw his bum disappearing round the corner.

He was sitting on the doorstep.
OMG I was so releived that he was OK.

But, I keep him on a lead now & unfortunately he grumbles when other dogs approach.

He´s not castrated & I´m seriously wondering if this would help-that he wouldn´t grumble so much on a lead & that his recall might improve.

Have got as far as dropping the lead but that´s it.

We have a halter rather than a collar.

It would only help with a small part of the problem, but we have a little clip-on light that goes on the dog's collar so we can see where he is in the dark/dusk. Wouldn't be much use if he's slipped out of this collar obviously though!

Otherwise I think it's just a case of lots of practice with the recall, and maybe do it so when he comes back to you he has to sit and wait before he gets the treat?
