Can anyone help me find a good home for a dog that deserves a better life?

I'm trying to help find a home for an 11 year old Weimaraner called Rupert and would appreciate any suggestions. This dog's owners are planning to put this dog down after failing to find anyone willing to rehome him. They have put adverts in the local papers, contacted dog rescue organisations and several Weimaraner associations but have not had any success. They initially decided to rehome this dog due to the fact that their children are unable to have friends round to play because he is very easily excited and can be unpredictable around strangers.
I believe that this dog has not had a particularly good life and would love to find him a good home for the remainder of his life. I am unable to take him on as I have a young son.

If you can help or suggest any other organisations I can contact, that would be really appreciated.

A very angry Val here... what horrible, horrible owners. Angry

I'll do my best, JollyTired, if you'll let me. And please, don't worry, I don't bite too often. :)

Firstly I must ask you to beg and beg the owners to hold on as it won't be easy but it CAN be done although it will take time. I'm bloody minded and determined but I'm not a miracle worker and an older dog with alleged unpredictability issues isn't going to be easy to place. This sort of thing is, well, it's what I do, as an independent rescuer I find places in no kill rescues across the UK for dogs like Rupert and for pound dogs who would otherwise be killed.

Next, please can you pm me to tell me whereabouts Rupert is at the moment, what he's like with other dogs, with cats, with adults and as much as possible about his unpredictability.

I'll also need to know if he is neutered and if he's fully up to date with his vaccinations.

I'll explain more and provide you with references so you can check out who I am and will give you my contact details too.

HTH. :)

(Blush at the fact that I clapped when I saw Valhalla had joined the case)

I know nothing about dogs and have 2 cats, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Rupert.

Good luck.

Sad that these people would take their pet of 11 years and have it PTS

Is this unpredictability a new issue? Surely there are other solutions, like keeping dog separate from visitors?

chickchickchicken · 22/03/2011 23:52

Val - i cant help with finding a home but if i can help with any other part of the rehoming process let me know

JollyTired · 22/03/2011 23:54

Thank you so much for your responses.

Val I will get as much information for you as I possibly can and PM you with all the details asap. I think I have till August to find Rupert a home. Rupert lives in East Sussex.

Thanks so so much!

Oh the poor poor boy! I love Weims... they're gorgeous dogs.

coccyx · 24/03/2011 18:35

Gosh what are some people like????
Good luck with the rehoming

AnonymousBird · 24/03/2011 18:51

Crikey, they've had him 11 years and now they want to rehome/put him down? That makes me Sad. Can't they come up with an arrangement whereby he is kept behind a door/gate whilst people are round if it really is that much of a problem?

Poor thing. Good luck JT and Valhalla.
