Dog feels cold to the touch

My border collie (7) has started getting under the quilt with us in the middle of the night. Which is unusual, but I've let her do it.

Today, she's spent the whole day in our (large) garden as we've been working on it all day. It's not been particularly cold outside.

Half an hour ago she got up on the sofa with us and she felt cold to the touch, her coat was very cold. She's been indoors a good few hours so it's not like she's just come in from outdoors.

I've got her wrapped in a blanket and she's fallen asleep between OH and me. She's zonked.

Should I be concerned with this change in behaviour or the fact she feels so cold? Her nose is wet (but cold!) - though she's warmed up now - and she's very happy, waggy tailed and eating and drinking fine.

Any ideas?

you say she has warmed up. do you mean when you touch her she feels warm? is this a recent thing that its starting to take her longer to warm up? if so i would take her to the vet for a wee check up.

I would take her to the vet too-could be a thyroid problem possibly? I think any noticable change in an animal warrants a trip to the vets, just to be on the safe side.

Oh blimey, just read that back - me saying (large) garden, I only meant that she'd been racing round like a loon around a big area all day none stop, not bragging about size of garden!

Yes, she feels a lot warmer now - she's buggered off now under the dining table.

She seems fine in herself, but I just worry about her all the time as she's getting older, people are amazed when they hear she's 7 as she still has a puppy face.

Never felt her that cold before, and her change in behaviour (she's not tried to get into bed with us for years as exDP who we share her with won't let her in his bedroom) has been surprising (but not unpleasant, I love her getting into bed for a snuggle - DP doesn't like it though as she wakes him up!).

I will pop her to the vets this week just for a check up - though the vet has always said "if her tail's wagging, there is nothing to worry about"! So maybe they won't want to do anything anyway.

yes fudge i was secretly seething at you being so boastful of your large garden!!

honestly i didn't even notice the large part!! relax.

it does no harm to get her checked even if her tail is wagging. if tehre is a problem it is best to know. Smile

Agree that any change in your dog is usually worth a trip to the vets, just to put your mind at rest if nothing else.

My dog has always felt the cold, and if he comes back from a walk damp he'll often be shivering on the sofa half an hour later. I got him a fleecy jumper from equifleece here and it keeps him really cosy - he loves snuggling up in it and he looks really silly cute.

btw I don't work for the company!!! Other dog fleeces are available.....!!
