Possibly looking into rehoming a dog

..what do we need to think about?

We've just moved into a place where we are allowed pets (well, non-caged pets) and we are thinking about getting a dog. I have lived with dogs before, but as they were my housemate's dogs I obviously got the cheap end of the deal.

We are in a flat, but have loads of access to parks and woods right next to the flat. So it wont be cooped up inside.

Are there any things we need to know?

Do you go out to work? If so you'd need to think about finding a way for the dog not to be left alone for too long - this was the biggest obstacle for us, though we manage with a combination of working from home and a dog-walker.

Currently not working due to illness, but will be working from home in the future. DH also works from home.

So the dog will rarely be left alone, and never for long.

If you have a look at the thread here you'll see a quick discussion of the main points to consider.

I should also mention that you will need the written consent of your landlord if you are renting. If you are an owner check there are no conditions on owning a pet if there is a management company etc.

Thankyou :)

Luckily we already have permission

Cost (insurance, good quality dog food, etc.)
Responsibilities (who will take care of the daily walks, does the poo patrol, etc.)
Training (books, training class)
Holidays (what will you do with the dog when you go on holiday?)
Emergencies (if you had to leave your dog for an extended period (like overnight) then is there someone local that you can rely on to look after the dog?)

Good luck!
