how to keep GARDEN POO FREE - dh not picking up regularly enough

We recently got a lovely border terrier. i wasnt keen, but dh nagged me into submission. he was self employed at the time and promised to take full responsibility for the dog.

since then, dh has returned to full time employment and we have moved to a house with a larger garden. dh absolutely knows that dog poo is his department, but he is rubbish at picking it up. it makes me so mad that he does it in 'batches' every week or 2, and esp now the spring is arriving, i want the dc to be able to enjoy their new garden without this toxic hazard.

i sympathise with dh, and know that its hard to pick up when its dark when he gets home and the mornings are a rush. i also work 3 long days (we have a dog sitter). but he did agree to take on poo duty as a condition of getting the dog.

i think part of the problem is that the dog loves to go out and play often, and we dont see when he poos. also he poos anywhere he wishes, and they're hard to spot on the large lawn amongst the leaves.

so.... any tips for dh regarding picking up poo routine.

or tips for getting dog to use just one area of garden?

i do 'muck in' if its a fine day and the dc want to use the garden, but the problem is larger now that we've moved.

any advice? x

Oh, and to train our dog to poo/wee in the same place, we simply stayed out in the garden with her for a while, then as soon as we saw her squatting, we got her to move. Our garden is not that big, so I suppose it was easier in that respect.

We also know she has a wee first thing in the morning, so we started that way - we went outside with her first thing, took her straight to the right spot and stayed with her and praised like mad when she went there. Treats, etc. THEN she had her breakfast. So, basic behaviour modification.

your DH is a knob if he nagged to get a pet he cant be bothered to be responsible for. cleaning up once every week or 2?? yuck!! poo doesn't get a chance to cool in my yard and as soon as i lift it i disinfect the spot too.

Our dog goes in the same place every time, we have a gravelly area at the side of the house we call poo corner - he loves it. Wasn't difficult to train him to do it, and we're currently trying to get him to wee round there as well to save our lawn! Just take the dog out there on the lead till he does it, then lots of praise/treat and let him free for a run around.

i intend training my dog to poo in one place. i am going to put 4 concrete slabs in one corner of the garden, and the intention is, i will stay out with him in the garden and if he squats i will move him to the slabs. hopefully wont take too long for him to get the idea.

We trained our dog not to poo in the garden - if she even looked like she was going to go we whacked on the lead and took her for a walk - wee too - now she only wees or poss when we take her out and we never have to worry about the kids rolling around the garden.

We have the same issue, fed only once a day but poos minimum 3 times a day! Usually goes to same few places in garden, so not ALL over.Have checked amount of fibre in his dry food but it is on a par with most dry foods. I think some dogs just go more than others! He usually saves it for the garden too.

Your DH needs to step up to the mark IMHO. I nagged DH into submission to get a dog and promised that I'd do all the work. I've recently started a full time job so I get up before anyone else and take him for a short walk. That way he poo's away from the garden. Then I walk him again after work.

My dog, my responsibility.

know your hubby promised but not sure why you couldn't pick it up? is it such a big deal
