Staffie Cross with children?

Hi all,

Looking fo some advice. I have been desprate for a dog for years, grew up with them, and now have bought house and started family I feel like I'm missing something!

I have been looking at the Dogs trust website and seen a 2 year old staffie cross bitch, and have fallen in love. She is currently with her pups but once they have been rehomed she will be sprayed and will be ready for rehoming.

According to the woman I spoke t she is the most loving dog ever! Good with kids and always looking for cuddles.

I have had a german sheprard/collie cross, rough collie and welsh vcollie so no experience with Staffie x's.

Any advice?

Should say my children are 5 and 3, I am a stay at home mum, and we do lots of walking during day in local country parks.

I have a Staffy who is wonderful with my ASD Ds.
They are lovely , playful, patient dogs who just love to be around you.
My is currently snoozing glued to my leg!

Obviously you never leave any dog unattended with any children.
I recommend a Halti! The strength mine has is unreal especially when he sees other people. He does love his fusses.

I used a Halti with my welsh collie, didnt help him, he just looked like a gimp! But he was just a dumb dog lol!

Going to see her tomorrow, cam't wait!

I have a Staff too (also from Dogs Trust): we got her two years ago and honestly she's the most friendly loveable dog ever! She loves everyone - crap guard dog though Wink

You've already been in touch with Dogs Trust and they say she's great. Go for it ... like Perfect said, never leave ANY dog alone with children. Staffs have a bad reputation because of bad owners - it's not the dogs.

I have a staff cross. He is like the ever ready bunny, he is never worn out, no matter how much training, walking and running he gets. We think he has a bit of collie in him too though, so that could be why in his case. He is extremely bouncy and energetic, plus very driven, so very, very easy to train but would be a nightmare in the 'wrong' hands. He really needs a job to do and I am hoping once he is a bit older and I have had my baby (am pregnant) that I can do some agility with him.

He's good with my children, but just needs to calm down a lot in general, I am hoping this will come more with age and a job to do...

This is him a while ago stuck on our kitchen table!

Yes, I have a rescue Staffie too, though as he is 9 he is not as bouncy as some of the younger ones. He is incredibly good natured, you can take his food away mid meal, and he is very gentle. When the vet had to examine him to check him over he found beingpoked and prodded a bit uncomfortable and just pushed his head under my arm so he didn't have to look at him, but stood there and took it all.

I used to be a bit afraid of Staffies but now I have one I think they are much maligned. We have some friends with a 5 year old bitch and she is also very sweet natured, despite having had a terrible life and being rescued from death row ( as urs was)

We are now total converts to the breed. The Dogs Trust would only have taken the one you are interested in if they felt it would make a good pet, so I hope you get on well and end up together.

Soaking.... do you have an update? we are all waiting to hear!

CherryMonster · 10/03/2011 23:44

midori- would i be right in thinking that your dog is a staffie x lab? he looks like it.

OnEdge · 10/03/2011 23:47

I was brought up with a staffi/lab cross, she was lovely.

soakingfromtheschoolrun · 24/03/2011 17:22

sorry Ladies!
Tanya was already re homed, and the dogs trust had no other dogs suitable.

I have now rehomed a lab cross, with a staffy I think lol! Has staffy eyes!
