My chicken is gone!!

I took my cooked chicken out of the fridge earlier to strip an make some chicken sandwiches we had allready had two meals off it, when DD got hurt so I went in to check on her and calm her down I went back in my kitchen to finish my chicken and it was gone.

All that was in my kitchen was a rather shifty Labador. I have hunted for the chicken and can find no evidence of it will he be okay? he seems fine and very happy I might add, it was mostly just carcass.

Is the issue that your dog has eaten something that could make him sick, or that he has helped himself from food from the counter?

lemonbeaver · 02/03/2011 11:33

umm shifty looking lab, missing chicken, not sure but maybe just maybe the cat had it Grin

Crawling · 02/03/2011 11:34

I am not worried about the chicken it was my fault for leaving it out just that I heard dogs should not have chicken bones.

Give the vet a quick ring for advice/headsup that the chicken snatcher might be headed in lol?

Hubby's dog that they had when he was growing up once managed to get the oven door open and swipe an entire (uncooked) chicken out of there. Dog survived unscathed, dinner was seriously wounded.

mmsmum · 02/03/2011 12:13

I also thought this was about a live chicken and was posted in the wrong place Grin

I think you need to ring your vet, cooked chicken bones are not good for his insides, but ring the vet as they will know better

MmeLindt · 02/03/2011 12:15

Thought it was a chicken keeper thread too.

Uncooked bones are fine, I have heard, but cooked chicken dangerous.

Call vet for advice. Silly dog.

Crawling · 02/03/2011 12:16

Thanks I spoke to the vet she said he should be fine Smile.

I know that shifty labrador look well!

My lab has eaten a whole tray of fairy cakes (including the paper cases) before now, and rotting rabbits and live parrokeets with no discernible effect on his wellbeing. However he is a big bulky show line dog; the thin working line dogs seem to get upset stomachs more easily.

I think the worry about cooked bones is they splinter more easily and can cause choking. Do ring the vet for advice they must be used to this with labs!

bettys · 02/03/2011 12:22

Cross-post - glad to hear the vet said he should be ok!

MmeLindt · 02/03/2011 12:24

Phew.

I am very thankful that my dog cannot reach the worktops. My parents had a Springer who pinched everything that she could get her nose close to.

Crawling · 02/03/2011 12:25

She said most problems are caused with swallowing the bones, but he has done that fine so should be okay, to watch him for a day or two, any unusual symptoms to take him up to get checked out, or blood in stools e.t.c Smile

Live parakeets! Shock It's the plural I'm shocked at lol

My dog is actually really good with food, he will sniff it, might push it with his nose and may even have a cheeky wee lick if he thinks no-one is watching but I don't think he would ever steal food like that. But it may be that I've never given him the opportunity

bettys · 02/03/2011 13:08

It was just one parrakeet which I could not get off him as another dog was chasing him for it, so he ate to stop the other dog having itShock. They are absolute pests here (the parrakeets, that is).

PurpleFrog · 02/03/2011 15:10

Ah - so it was a wild parakeet - he didn't sneak into a cage while you were visiting relatives or something! Grin

fifi25 · 02/03/2011 18:00

someone i know's mil left the 3 tier wedding cake at the back of the bench, she came in to find it on the floor half eaten by her Labrador

frostyfingers · 02/03/2011 18:06

I went to stay with friends the other day and took the 2 labs. I left my zipped up overnight case on a chair with their dinner inside another tied up bag with their bowls.

We went out for 1 hour and when we came back senior dog had unzipped suitcase, removed the plastic bag and eaten both sets of dinner. As it was dried food she spent the night drinking lots, moaning slightly and farting. When it came to her dinner time she still thought that she ought to have something.....

My case and contents were completely undamaged and still on the chair.

Where there's food there's a clever lab!

bettys · 02/03/2011 18:13

This Christmas mine ate every chocolate off the tree bar one he couldn't reach right at the top. Not a single bauble was broken or disturbed. I was all prepared to accuse someone else until he sicked up the tin foil in our bedroom - bless!

Makes a change from parrakeets, I suppose.
