Dashchund suffering with back problems - help needed.

I have 2 miniature wire haired dachshunds who are 5 years old. On Friday eve one of them suddenly started squealing with pain. We took her immediately to the vets and they suspect she's somehow hurt her back. She has to have X-rays on Thursday and although she is able to walk, she's having difficulties with her legs and is obviously in a lot of pain when the nurofen which the vet prescribed wears off. I was wondering whether anyone else has had similar problems and what the prognosis is/whether she'll need surgery. We're all really worried and wonder if anyone else has been through this.

Dachshunds are prone to a variety of back problems, though the fact that hse is walking is good news. Without actually examining the dog and seeing x-rays prognosis/ need for surgery is impossible to advise.
One query is it nurofen that has been prescribed or a nurofen like drug?

We had a beautiful dachshund when we were first married and sadly he had serious back problems and had to be pts after surgery did not work. Firstly the smaller and shorter the dog the better the prognosis ( poor Henry was very large and long, like a red setter with short legs) Secondly if they need surgery there is only a limited time in which it can work if there is paralysis - so make sure the vet is expert and can operate quickly if required. The fact that your dog is mobile is a good sign. Our dog seemed afraid and sluggish for a couple of days, reluctant to go out and then suddenly seemed to go off his back legs. I love dachshunds and would love another, but this was so sad for us it makes me reluctant to have one again ( and I'm a Staffie girl now anyway). Good luck with your girl, hope she is OK

Thanks both for your advice. Have taken her back in this morning to vets and left her in for X rays so am waiting to hear what vet has to say. Lizcat it was metacam that the vet had prescribed, which seemed to take the edge off as she was shaking when it wore - so I think in a lot of pain Sad. She was really reluctant to come out of her crate this morning and normally races out. Like Henry, Higgle it was her back legs that she is having problems with and it's intersting you said that about the larger the dog is as she is much bigger than her sister, so maybe more likely to suffer. I had heard that they were proned to back problems. Will keep my fingers crossed and let you know.
