Dog licking at wound...

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 02/03/2011 00:22

We had our cocker spaniel 'done' today (so far seems happy enough..)

But he keeps licking at the wound and the collar just will not stay in him on the tightest setting.

I'm worried he's going to hurt himself with his frantic trying to get it off as well... Plus wake the baby.

Help please!!

You could try putting clothing over the wound. Bizarre but effective for our neighbours' dog who spent several weeks taped up inside a t-shirt!

We did that when our lab was spayed, DrSeuss - she wore a tshirt for 10 days or so. She started off in one of ds3's skinnyfit t-shirts, but then I went to asda and bought her one of her own, with pink sparkliness on it (PFDog syndrome Blush).

My friend's just had her dog spayed. She hated the collar so my friend resorted to putting a pair of son's boxer shorts on the back end and a t-shirt on the front end. Seemed to do the trick - although was a bit of pain undressing her to go for a week!

You could always cut holes....

Wales - it might be easier for your friend if she just used a long t-shirt - that's what we did for our lab, and she was able to do a wee/poo without getting it on the t-shirt.

We spent a fortnight on pretty much 24-7 ball-licking watch yetlling "gerroff yer balls" everytime a tongue so much flickered in that direction.

Not the course to be recommended!

Emptyshell - I have to do that with dh all the time! GrinWink

I think dogs wearing pants and vests is very cute lol

walesblackbird · 02/03/2011 12:17

She did look cute - although a little forlorn! But she's up and about and very eager for walkies!

We looped our cockers 'lampshade' collars round their normal collars so they couldn,t remove them!!

It did mean they wore them 24 7 as we couldn't be bothered taking them on & off Smile

beautifulgirls · 03/03/2011 22:56

I would go back to your vet tomorrow and make them swap the collar for one that fits properly.

I wish I'd known about the t-shirts when my cocker was done!! The vet promised me three days of peace and quiet while he recovered but no, he was bouncing off the walls again the next morning! Grin

He hated the lampshade and would get really depressed when I put it on, refusing to move in it, with his head drooping down so that you couldn't even see his face. He wouldn't wee with it on either, so it was constantly being taken on and off as he seemed to wee every 5 minutes until he was a year old! Smile This depression would last until I left the house, when he must have suddenly perked up because I'd come home to find the lampshade shredded all over the floor.... after I'd shelled out another £6 for the third one I gave up replacing them and adopted emptyshell's method (lol)

Oh dear, he's 3.5 now and writing this makes me realise how far we've come!! He's fast asleep in the sunshine right now and hardly gives me a minute's trouble Grin

I've put a couple of pictures of Coco in her t-shirt on my profile.

TheFlyingOnion · 06/03/2011 17:07

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 06/03/2011 17:10
